be changed while in the car? I know the engine needs to be lifted to remove the oil pan, but can those gaskets be changed without completely pulling the engine out?

It is a one piece circular lip seal isn't it? You may not need to remove the pan, it might work to remove the flywheel, and replace it directly from behind the engine. Undoubtably, Don knows more about this than I do. Is your new motor leaking already?

Exactly, unless you want to change the pan gaskets, you only have to remove the flywheel and back. On two-piece RMS's you had to even remove the rear main to replace it.

Thanks guys, yeah, my engine has a small leak (has for a while) and now that it is not my daily driver anymore, I am going to fix all the small problems that have been bugging me. I plan to replace both gaskets since I don't know wich one is the leaker, and also put the Milodon road race pan on too. I have a ton of parts piled up around the house just waiting to go into the car, it just takes time. My Yukon has the same leak, so I should be pretty good at it when I am finished Thankfully the Yukons pan can be dropped without much trouble at all, nothing is in the way. The Camaro on the other hand....... You know, maybe that is why that guy had made the 4x4 out of his Camaro.. ? ..

Hmmm , does yours yhave studs or bolts holding the oil pan to the seal (2 bolts or studs)? Either way it would be MUCH easier to do it with a clear shot of the seal , they can be a pain to do . Also you should be using a one peice oil pan gasket , they are reuseable so you dont have to worry about that if yo dop the pan.

To replace the seal , assuming the tranny is out of the way.Leave the oil in , remove all of the oil pan bolts except the front 4 loosen them , the weight of the oil in the pan will pull the pan far enough away from the block for you to remove the seal .
