I am one of the lucky ones that live in Southern Cal, where the sun shines bright, the women are beauties, and home of the nations WORST Emissions standards. So, I want to hear from my fellow Californians, who have passed smog legally (or not ) and have a high HP machine that runs in this fine state.

My intentions are to cherry pick my 305, and drop a 350 crate motor in my car. However, as this post implies, SMOG legality. What can I do from a speedfreaks perspective to have a legal high HP 350? Is there anything I can do to tweak the motor (or the system) to make sure my car can drive in Cali?

This post mainly is in regards to being Smog legal. I know of other complications with doing an engine swap, but I dont need to hear about that. I want to know if anyone knows, or knows anyone that has a beast in Cali that is legal. And if so, what has he done to keep it that way.

I mean, I have connections in DMV, but, I'de rather be a legal kinda guy. I could get my car registered, but I'de rather not drive in fear of some CHP strip searching my damn engine. So, whats the word California? 350 swap a legal go? or an illegal dream?

 

If you have a '91 RS you can forget about a carb.
It came with inj. and in Ca. it must stay inj.

Have you already changed your car over to a carb? You can drop in a 350 with efi and make good hp and still pass smog. Your RS would have tbi. Change it over to tpi and make hp that is smog legal.

It's not the cops you have to worry about its the smog techs.

 

I knwo of a shop here that i go to for smog, the dude kinda "looks the other way" towards certain things if your in wiht him. He basically doesnt care bout carb numbers or anythign liek that, just looks to make sure thiers cats, smog pump, then puts her on the dyno/sniffer, if it passes, then you good to go. But I dont think hed pass a carb on a supposed efi car....

 

Yes the cops do care ....$1000 fine if caught without smog equiptment in a random check stop.

 

crap i better not get Yanked by the good o'l Villa Park Bastards then. i have absolutely NO smog parts at all on my car. Hell i even gutted the cat...

funny thing is i just " passed" my smog check... with a little help from my pal, Ben Franklin.

YES villa park cops are bastards... there is NO crime in VP.. they have nothing better to do then pull anyone under the age of 30 over in anything remotely resembling a fast car.
