its possible but you will have to make sure that it can meet all the california laws governoring cars. IE saftey laws, emmisions, etc.

It has to pass a cali smog test. You'll need to pay transfer fees and sales tax on it. The DMV will require you to fill out a form (go to the info desk) and some guy will come and check out the vehicle and sign it off. The guy who checked mine only verified the VIN on the dash, and looked under the hood briefly. That was about it.

i think that you have to only pay the sales tax from the place that you bought it.

When smog laws first went on the books, some people in Ca. tried to circumvent Ca. stricter smog laws by buying new cars in Arizona, and then first registering them here. If you are buying a new vehicle that has never been registered, it has to meet California emissions standards including passing the visual inspection for all Ca. required parts. The state cannot legally force anyone who moves here from out of state to spend the money necessary to make their car conform to Ca emission standards if the car meets 49 state standards for the year it was manufactured. If you buy a used car from out of state that meets 49 state standards, it can be registered in Ca. The thing that you have to be careful about is that the other 49 states don't require visual inspections. If you read some of the tech sections of this board, you'll see members from other states that have changed out tpi for Holley carbs, and passed smog in their home state. If they move to Ca., they will have to put the car back to 49 state legal emission standards before they can register the car. No carbs. are legal after 1986 I think it is. The moral here is to make sure before you buy an out of state used vehicle that it is stock, or if modified, has only parts with a carb eo#. You might find a nice 3rd gen in Texsas with a miniram. You won't be able to register it in Ca. until you replace the miniram with something smog legal.

The state is going all out to stop people who take bribes to pass illegal cars. I believe the cost of getting caught is a fine of $25,000.00 plus loss of smog license. If the situation is anything like the refrigeration industry, the person turning the tech in gets $10,000.00 of the fine. You might find someone to take your bribe, but when I look at the cost, anyone who takes less than $1,000,000.00 is a fool. You need to get a big enough bribe to retire on, since if you get caught, you will be retired. If you do find someone to take your bribe this time, that only buys you 2 years, at which time you need to do it again. If your guy got caught, then you need to find someone else next time. If you get the "test only" notice, you have to find someone else to bribe. It will always have to be someone you know personally, because a stranger has no way of knowing that you won't offer the bribe so that you can turn him in for an easy $10,000.00.
