Disconnect the inline four prong connector that runs from the distributor (located on the driver's side, by the engine-tranny mount flange), loosen the hold down bolt (9/16"), turn on the car, using a timing light ... adjust the distributor for the preoper timing.

This applies to carb'ed V8 3rd gens only, TPI/TBI are different.

looking from the front
8____7
6____5
4____3
2____1

On my distributor cap there is a line between where cylinders 1 and 2 connect. IIRC counter-clockwise will advance the base timing.

IIRC - if I remember correctly
TIA - Thanks in advance

The best timing would be as much as you can get without the car pinging. Usually thats around 8-10 degrees initial. Dont forget to set it back to stock when you go in for your smog check.

now i can start with the stupid questions. When you say as much as you can get away with, you mean advanced, right? and when you say pinging?

Yeah, the most you can advance the timing without the car pinging. If you advance it too much the spark plug will fire while the piston is still travelling up on the compression stroke and it will "knock" or "ping." Same concept as preignition, going off before it's supposed to basically
