What's a good replacement distributor? Rusty recommended the Napa one which is part #NRD481830. What are some other ones that I should look at? Anyone have the GM part # for an OEM replacement? I have a feeling my recent car trouble is related to the distributor. Even if it's not things are looking pretty nasty with the original one in the car. Also what's a good ignition coil replacement? It's time for a major overhaul on my ignition on the car since a lot of the stuff is original and getting corroted. If anyone can throw me some part #s to take a look at it will be greatly appreciated. I want to get this car moving again.

 

Nigel you can go to any GM and ask them the part number on your OE.. Get there price.. And any other GM price you can find best.. That's if you want original ignition in your car.. MSD might have some good stuff, then they have there problems..

So it sounds you have found the problem with your car.. That is great..

 

Unfortunately I work the hours the parts dept is open at the dealerships plus I really hate dealing with the parts guys. I am just asking to see if someone on the board had the part # off hand since then I can have my sister's BF find out his cost on it. He's a dealer at Crest Chevy. The only reason I mentioned OE is b/c look how long the GM one in my car lasted. I just wanted to know if anyone had knew of any other ones I should look at that maybe had better performance or better value.

 

The GM part number has been discontinued (or at least that's what Power Chevy in LB told me...) They said the only way to replace it with GM parts was to piece it together separately at a cost of approximately $715 dollars. You could practically buy a magneto for that kind of money.

Just take yours out and replace the pickup coil, module and change the cap and rotor as long as the bushings are good then a new one wouldn't be any better.

I actually purchased one of those distributors for the IROC it claims to be a 'GM Performance Late V8 Distributor - This complete distributor is used on late model V8 engines with fuel injection and computer controls.'

It looks really bad under the cap. Lots of corrosion and the wires are becoming so brittle that the covering on them are coming off. I don't even know if the bushings are good or if they are waiting to die. It's going on 17 years old so at this point I think it's just safe assurance to go ahead and replace the whole thing.

That's exactly what I was looking for. How is it working out for you? Is it exactly like the OEM one? It looks like it.

Working out great for me to be honest, I went ahead and replaced to just to have some piece of mind that the distributor was supposed to be brand new, but so far no complaints. I just have to make sure to stay on top of replacing the cap and rotor on the more regular basis
