Yes the global weighs a ton and it does not adapt to different transmission swaps since its designed strickly around factory crossmember locations. The reasons why I got rid of mine and went to a spoon er spohn. (changed trans to tremec tko).

Looks good, I assume you switched for additional clearance for your new kick *** exhaust setup?

 

Was the weight savings significant enough to mention? I know the Global West piece does appear to be quite beefy

 

The Global West Trac-link is 40.5lbs and the Jegs Torque arm is 23.4lbs. Now the car is in the 2900s I hope this 17lbs with a few more things will get it in the 2800s

17.1 New Torque arm
42.0 New 9 Bolt rear end with lower gears
18.0 New exhaust
28.0 New seats and mounts
7.6 Hood latch and headlight bar
112.7lbs Total

This will get me deep into the 2800s and then someday a new motor that is 110lbs less and you have it a mid 2,700lbs street car.

Jerry, ever thought of making an exhaust of Titanium?

reason im asking is because my friend just bought a full 3" titanium exhaust, muffler included for his WRX STi... man that thing is the lightest metal i have ever held... i mean you can hold the entire exhaust from header flange to muffler with 1 hand..

Titanium will not burn like magnesium, and yes I have a number if Titanium parts on the car.

 

I have seen it. I use to work with it daily. Seen what a red hot piece of metal thrown carelessly into a titanium chip gondola will do. It burns real nice. 20+ years in aerospace programming and machining exotic metals. Don't believe? try it. Get a nice 55 gal drum and fill it with titanium chips and then take a red hot piece metal and toss it in. Better have the fire dept handy.

 

In that regard, aluminum has similar properties. Powdered aluminum is a component in many rocket fuels and I know the military uses it some bombs, daisy cutters come to mind.

 

so jerry, you've had it for a bit now.... update on the arm? was it worth drilling thoes holes in the floorpan?

i want it, but everytime i goto order it, i hesitate because i know once i drill thoes holes to put it on, theres no going back.. mines a street car first, and i dont want anything that makes noise, causes quirky handling, ect... would you reccomend it for a street car?
it effect your 60' any?

 

Same question with same reservations. I was thinking of buying your Global West unit but the weight difference is giving me pause. I understand the factory unit only weighs 15 pounds. Waiting on your report. Allen

 

The properties of powdered metal are totally different than a solid piece. Fill that 55 galolon drum with machined aircraft parts, and throw all the red hot steel at it that you want to and it won't light off.

 

Im talking about titanium/magnesium "machining chips" You may get powder from a water jet residue, and chips from milling or turning machines. Solid Titanium, Magnesium material "will" lite off with enough heat and it will take more than just throwing "a" piece of red hot material at them. Machine chips will lite off at a much lower heat threshold than solid material. When maching "ti" or "mag" you "have to" have special fire equipment handy to put out any "ti/mag" fires.
Been machining for many years and know what Im talking about.

 

So why would you think a titanium exhaust pipe would light off if it scraped on the pavement going over a speed bump at a crawl?

 

what I ment is most exhibition wheel stand cars have small amounts of "ti" on their wheelie bars to put on a "Spark light show" for the crowds when they are on 2 wheels. Im sure you seen it at the drags. Thats what they use.
So if you also had a titanium exhaust and it scapred the ground "hard" enough it would lite off and have a small light show under the car. It would take alot (like a major car fire.) to get it to "burn". Once it does tho, you can kiss that sucker goodbye. I 've seen a titanium fire burn right through the machine bed of a milling machine. It burns that hot. You cant put it out with basic fire extinguishers. It takes special chemicals to smother the fire. Magnesium is very very much the same way.

however, everyone bashed the setup and made no real progress toward explaining why it cant be used on fbodys. I think Dean came the closest to explaining it.

 

Well, Dean here again, just under a different name this time.

The reason why you can not use a third link like the one pictured is because we simply do not have the room under the chassis above the diff and driveshaft tunnel to add one. It is all about chassis design and strength points. Certainly you can torch out that area (and loose your back seats) and weld in custom bracing provisions for an upper third link chassis mount that would have the proper length and geometry to work. It basically would involve a larger hump between the rear seats of a third gen and good custom chassis (floorpan) rigidity on the new humpp section to control for and aft pressures.

 

Hmmmmm. Maybe install one where the existing 3rd gen one goes. Only it would bolt to the top where the two bolts go down through the pinion area. Then extend it to the existing transmission mount.

Then what would be the benefit over the existing 3rd gen style such as the factory, Global West or Spohn units? I already have in mind what one would look like if it was of benefit.
