Looking for paint advice & a shop in the 310 or 818 area
I'm looking for paint advice & a shop in the 310 or 818 area...
I have a 1987 IROC Z28 convertible. Has factory color, was repainted once a long time ago, and is fading on the top of the hood and trunk. There are also three small rust spots - one by the trunk latch (not rot - yet), and two small holes underneath the front top of each rear wheel well. The rest of the car, floors, doors, etc. are clean and rust free - probably the result of a good undercoating that is only now starting to peel off. Anyway, I digress...
Does anyone know where I can have my car painted by a professional for a fair price? I don't want a low quality paint job that will chip and peel. Someone to strip the bad paint, remove the lights, locks, mirrors, etc. so I don't have paint where it's not supposed to me.
It's only a weekend car, so I don't really care if it takes several weeks to complete.
Also - what should I ask for as far as a type and brand of paint? Years ago, in high school (1989), I worked at a shop after school and we used BASF Glasurit (sp?), PPG Deltron and I forget what else. I have no idea what is out there now...
Thanks for any advice you can offer, guys.

Oh, yeah - I remember giving you crap about your rocker panels being black! haha....
I will say, and I said so then, that is a hell of a paint job - I was actually thinking of your car recently and how impressed I was with the paint work you had done.
Did the price of $1100 include any body work, or prep work, or did you have to do it all yourself?
I just don't have the time to pull everything off the car, and frankly I'm not qualified to do the kind of professional body work that I think will be needed to get it ready for really nice paint.
By the way, what brand of paint did he use down there? And how does it look now? Are you by chance going to the dinner tonight? I will be there with the 'vert...

I forgot to get a close up look at your paint tonight! But, I did see your car when I was looking at your motor, and it was nice.
I especially like the drag race video
So, you would recommend going that way? How does it work, take in to Mexico, leave it for a couple weeks and it's done?
How can I contact the guy?
Thanks for your advice, it was nice meeting you tonight!
Great dinner, really looking forward to the next one - and will go back to Ricky & Ronnie's next time you guys go...

There is no way I would sugjest anybody do anything or take their car anywhere that something like that existed.
So.....if you are worried then maybe it's not for you.

No don't get me wrong I'm not worried about the man you are recommeding at all. It would be the criminals down there that would worry me. I've heard quite a few stories of people being robbed while across the border and there is little you can do to get your things back, that's all. I'm still young and haven't been down there myself yet so I'm not one to point fingers I guess.

I can wait until spring, I have other areas to address - some interior trim parts, refinish one or two wheels, redo my top, A/C, heater core, and who knows what else.
Anyone want to come along?

Don/Kevin: Do you have any other pics? I am up in Bakersfield so making an LA get-together to see the white TA is a stretch these days, at least until Jan06. Between the TA and 82FirebirdTA's ride, it appears your guy does very nice work. BTW I searched for posts about "Mexico" and "paint" and didn't get a whole lot. Thanks in any case.

Maybe we could rent a van or something from Enterprise for cheap money and sort of car pool home, and again on the way down to get our cars. I think that's a good idea.
Kevin, can you get us this guy's contact info? I'd like to talk with him and find out how to start planning it out.

One thing to consider is that if we bring a few cars down there for him to paint all at once, he will be overwhelmed with work, so it would probably take a month or two to get it all done. It wouldn't really bother me, just something to take into consideration.

He went back because of the AQMD and that way he can use the best products not available here.
He is about one block from the border in OTAY Mesa (east Tijuana)
his property is surrounded by 8 foot high fences.
I have all the details at the shop (business cards etc.)

I would not trust to take my car accross the boarder. Also most insurance companies do not cover in Mexico. If I were you, I would take it to a good local paint shop and pay few bucks more, or go to the one of community colleges around you, and register for class for paint and bodywork. usually those classes are for free (ROP).
Good luck, Ivan

A) You can get insurance for taking your car into Mexico. It does not cost very much.
B) If you want a good paint job in CA, you're going to spend at least $3000 and it will be done using EPA friendly water-based paints which will peel and flake off in a few years like your current factory paint job does.
C) The small risk is worth at least $2000 in savings to me. It might not be for you.

I was concerned as well with having a car painted in Mexico, until I visited the shop and saw the work done there. As has already been mentioned the shop is only a couple of blocks across the border. The vehicles stay on-site the entire time. I'll be having my Firebird painted there. If you want do as I did and visit the shop first before you decide. Yes going as a group is a good idea.

We are not in 80's era anymore; we are in 21 st century. No one uses water based paint anymore. Also your insurance will not pay you top dollar for your car if it gets stolen. On the other hand, Since when Mexican have better quality than the US?
finally, you can get 2 stage paint under $2000; I was quoted $1700 for my FULL SIZE TRUCK for a 2 stages paint job.

I think I can get better paints down there, possibly even DuPont Imron, maybe?
My insurance company (Progressive) allowed me to put a stated value on the car, I had no problem when my TransAm was vandalized two years ago and totalled. It was a 1985, rusty and beat up, but with only 65k miles. They gave me $5k, which is what they found it would cost to replace the car with one of taht mileage...
I think I might do this, if Lon and 1989GTA had their cars done there, then that's good enough for me...
Oh, and what's better in Mexico? Labor is CHEAP...

This is sounding better and better...
So, what do you guys know about paint? I had always heard Imron was a choice paint, but maybe there are other that are eaually as good or even better?
I really want a quality finish, something that is hard and durable, and won't chip..not cheap paint...

had my 82 painted at a ford dealership for a little over 1900, but I stripped the lights and stuff off the car. but that included 2 toning the car, and all body work this was a couple years ago though, downside took them 6 weeks to do the car but well worth the wait for a flawless paint job and a dent free body. Great thing about doing business here and at a dealership is the customer is always right.

Imron is illegal in Cali. and has been for 20 years or more. If you don't want to got to Mexico, you might try Arizona or Nevada, but you will probably pay a couple of grand extra for the job.

Re: Looking for paint advice & a shop in the 310 or 818 area
don do you have their contact info?
Pm if you like
Dons right on water base stuff thats all you can get
Ive seen new cars paint fade in a few yrs
You wont be getting good paint and body cheap esp here period
Had my truck done 5-6 yrs ago its completely gone (water base)
Interesting stories...I had a 86 5.0 was stolen around 89....cop in mexico had it for a long time. Detective told me dont even bother trying to get it if I did id be dead before I crossed back in the us.
Dons guy sounds safe enough. nothing worse than paying decent $ for paint and watching it fall apart in a short time. Again you wont get good paint here and a good job costs a LOT of money those guys know what its worth.
The only local guy I know that I trust is Dougs Custom in Chatsworth. It will be top notch but it wont be cheap.

Re: Looking for paint advice & a shop in the 310 or 818 area
I took my 74 Alfa Romeo to a local shop to ask for a quote (which was WAY too high, but my car needs a ton of work) and while I was there, I overheard the owner talking to someone who just needed a quick paint job. He recommended CA West Coast Paint and Body.
When I was looking for Firebirds, I came across a decent one in the area, but it badly needed a paint job. I spoke to someone at the place above, he told me a single stage paint job would be around $1500, and a 2 stage (clear coat) would be around $2500.
Ultimately, I didn't end up buying that car, but I totally would have went to these guys for a paint job.
Might wanna give this guy a call

Haha. Pretty funny this old thread keeps getting revived.
Don's guy in Mexico closed his doors some time ago. Around 06-07 if I remember right.
I have a 92 Z28 I am trying to restore to its former glory, the paint is original and its flaking off like crazy. It has several spots of surface rust because its down to the primer. Wondering if I should take it out of state for its paint job.

Re: Looking for paint advice & a shop in the 310 or 818 area
depends on your buget.
Know of 2 guys in chatsorth that have done work for me
One is "fair"...you may wait, 1 man deal. Usuall body shop put offs but does a good job...then there is dougs (have a car there now) but you will get it back fast, top notch eveyrthing youll be treated like aking. Runs a biz the way its supposed to be
Got a 15k quote on my camino yrs ago thought it was too much (needed extensive work), by the time I dealt with 2 other body shops many yrs later got the car back. Dougs would have been cheaper and been done in a month or two.
If you want perfect work and no "stories" call doug. Your car will be friggin perfect.
