Don's Latest Masterpiece

Don's Latest Masterpiece
In the car as of Saturday, July 17. Replacing a carb and an automatic with a tpi and a five-speed.
What you are looking at:
1. GM Fast Burn heads. These had some work done to them by another company (which probably wasn't cheap, by the way). Don pointed out the short comings of the work and corrected it. Thanks, Don!
2. HOT cam with 1.6 roller rockers
3. Maybe, just maybe, a little heavy on the bling
What you are not looking at:
1. Subframe connectors (already in the car); and
2. 9-bolt with 3.45s (already in the car);
3. All of the 1LE brake and suspension components that Don installed years ago (and which were the subject of a Super Chevy article);
This is definitely not a job for amateurs!
The members who made this engine what it is (note that it is not in any particular order and I will add names as my failing memory sputters along):
1. Don
2. Jerrywho
3. Luis
4. Andy
5. Troy
6. Kevin L
7. Brian for the diverter valve cover
It is still moving along although slowed somewhat by problems with a used transmission and some Edelbrock runners (I'm fighting the urge to call them Edelcrocks and I guess I just lost the fight).
Don is working through the pain. Thanks, Don.

Re: Don's Latest Masterpiece
Wow, there are an awful lot of wiring and fuel system changes to go from Carb to TPI, but you guys are doing it the right way and you are going to be giggling like a drunken 16 year old girl when it's done. Even Dons "mild" TPI motors are quantum leaps over stock.
And I've seen Don buy lunch before, you just have to EARN it. :-)

The carb'd motor was a rat's nest of hoses. This is an improvement, but just one of the reasons why this is no job for amateurs. Had to swap a gas tank from a tpi car, etc., etc., etc.
Valentin - Thanks. This is why Don is the only guy that touches my car.

Re: Don's Latest Masterpiece
Don had to pull the trans apart to change the speedo. He discovered a couple of problems, but it was a blessing in disguise.
If Don hadn't pulled the trans apart we would not have realized there was a problem until I started the car, tried to put it into gear to leave Don's shop and found out I couldn't. Put the car back on the hoist, drop the trans.... etc, etc.

Re: Don's Latest Masterpiece
That is good to hear. It should be a big improvement.
Kevin also tuned my car today and I'm very pleased with it. Drivability is just great as that was the area we worked on. We will leave the wide open throttle tuning to the chasis dyno. I know it is running lean in the upper rpm ranges and we will have to crank up the fuel pressure to compensate.

Re: Don's Latest Masterpiece
I let my buddy at a dealership talk me into those nice, expensive valve covers, which, by the way, was not difficult. There was an interference problem on one side and Don had to spend some time grinding away on the inside of the v/c.
That problem was minor compared to the problem with the Edelbrock runners. I picked them up used and I'm guessing that the guy I got them from sold them because he could not get the passenger side to seal. The flange had not been properly machined and there was a massive air leak.
And that problem was minor compared to the problem with the used transmission....

Thats SOP for Edlecrock. I know of 3 Edlecrock intakes, 2 SBC and one Flat head that were not machined right.
On one the intake ports and the bolt holes did not line up with the head.
