Just an awesome video...

I thought I would share. THis was the production car title at the ring (Nuringburg Germany)by the ZR1 Vette back in 2008. It is a flat out 7 1/2 minute run in a 'completely stock' production ZR1 Vette- STOCK....Meaning STOCK tires also. All the other major car manufacturers have representatives overlooking this sort of title challange making sure right down to the tire having little rubber nubs on them being new and unshaven.

1:35 into his timed run (about 1:42 of video clock- his run starts about 7 seconds into the run) he hits a dip in the circuit that soils his shorts for about the next 5 seconds. Talk about mental fatigue trying to keep the car between the lines at that speed on a course that has 156 corners and an 8 minute duration withj a pulse rate above 180 beats per minute.

What a rush. Watch it about 3 or 4 times before you try and critique it-You'll live it better veiwing it more than once- this guy does an impressive job in a stock (albeit a very respectable production racecar) but still remeber it is in stock showroom trim for everyday street use.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6mEirkQN8o

I would LOVE to build a TTA to beat this thing. Dollar for dollar, what a dream- I would give my right nut for that challange.

Re: Just an awesome video...

Back when I was in the Porsche business the hot video of the day was Yellowbird @ Nurburgring. No helmet, no fireproof suit, no gloves, and a production seat beat. Once I finished watching this video I was hooked. I promised myself that I would pilot a 3rd gen around Nurburging one day. What’s life without dreams right

Keep in mind that this footage is from 1987!

Once he got the tires hot and back on the uphill section of course he could do no wrong with the car. Its actually easier than alot of people think to lay a car like that out under power once the tires get over heated. He was having a blast of a time I could imagine. Production tires have come a long ways since 1987. THey were great then compared to the slippery 60's bias ply crap.

Thank you, I gotta say though, THere are afew of us here locally in So cal that it would be fun to put a team together if we had the sponsorship to go out and do something like this with a 3rd gen going for a Nurburgring record class record. Videos like this will help study a course through veiwing multiple types of cars and drivers to get acquinted to the courses dips bumps and turns. I would study tapes like this for hours on end if given an opportunity to do this in life. I WOULD go prepared.

Naw, reading between the lines of what I see in that video is a nch of fluff- Ill tell you why.

If it were ***** out driving, they would record the entire run like the link I posted. The multiple camera veiws show they were merely going for the effect of that and trying to present an on edge tape of super talent and extrodinary machine...well...lap times would tell that on its own without drifting fluff. Its merely showmanship of overdriving a car for the thrill of the veiwer. I am telling you first hand when you ge tthe tires hot with that kind of power and balance of a car the CAR WILL DO THAT ON ITS OWN with any average performance driver. They are shoing short blocks of drifting sequences and jumping around on the video showing only the best footage of a days filming with even an undercarraige shot and a Helicopter support.

I have so much power in my Vette that when I run a course with street tires and get them greasy like that I can power induce that car to steer with the throttle at over 100mph lighting up the tires. It is so easy to control its something you would have to experience to see just how secure and simple throttle induced steering is. Its actually alot slower ay around the course even though it looks so much more impressively fast... its not

Watch the start of Miles link again and you will see just how much of a handful the driver is working the steering wheel when the tires are not yet greasy. The car is twitchy and he is nerviously correcting the wheel in every corner. As the run progresses and the tires heat, they are less grippy and more predictable in slide. towards the later sections of the course he starts the thottle induced steer, but not at the start he can't. He is just overdriving the car. That car could do much faster staying in traction.

Re: Just an awesome video...

Very good point, the video looks really intense but it has gone through some editing. And the different camera angles add to the visual effect. My hats still off to the driver. I would probably only drive like that if I was wearing a helmet and you had a black and white follow me down the track (sirens blasting and lights glaring) if then. I am ignorant to the whole going fast and making turns at the same time. I usually go fast in a straight line, but I find the whole auto cross movement on these boards very interesting. I just read an article on a euro tuner web site ( http://www.eurotuner.com/howto/38238/index.html ) on what you mentioned "throttle induced steering" and how it helps you get out of the turns. Throttle oversteer is what throws you into a drift, right? I did not know what that was. Now I am learning. Thanks Dean.

Re: Just an awesome video...

Both those drivers have ***** of steel.

Those 100+ MPH sections would have me crapping my pants.

Especially that porsche, it looks like has to correct through every corner, the fast 100+ corrections are the freaky ones.

The corvette handles like a dream in comparison to the porsche in these two videos.

Re: Just an awesome video...

Now take a look what a full blown prototype racecar on race tires does by a guy thats probably run 5000 laps on the ring in his lifetime.

Now this is AWESOME (and I do not like that word unless it really applies- here I think we al would agree it does.

Just imagine for a minute iif he were to blow a tire at any given instant- that is alot more scary that a driver mistake- at this level I fear mechanical failure.

6 mins 48 second with an average speed of 113 mph. The ZR1 vette averaged 103.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwtyZ...eature=related

THe ALL TIME record is from the late Stefan Bellof ( Team mate of Derek Bell in 1983-1984) of Rothman Porsche who later died in a race at Nurburgring. He set the all time record in the Rothmann 956 Porsche at 6 mins 11 sec at an average spped above 125 mph.

Re: Just an awesome video...

Seen that video before. Good example of the ZR1 being driven hard. There is another where its chasing a Mercielago SV

But what I really want to know is why does a $100k+ Vette have the same steering wheel as my $25k Pontiac G6. Ugh. And before anyone asks my G6 GTP is leather wrapped too.

LOL

GM was banking on no Vette owners looking at a G6

At least the vette owners now know where to get cheaper replacements

Re: Just an awesome video...

WOw,wow, wow. I got to drive a friend of a friends ZR1 yesterday WITHOUT traction control on What a car, even nice when the brakes and tires were cold unlike the Ferarris. I could get into real trouble owning a car like that that could be daily driven. I never got on the freeway or wout of 4th gear but wow doew that out handle and brake my old Dinosaur 68 Vette. I think I can still outrun it though in a drag race, but it would be very close. Next I gotta try to convince steve to take it to Germany

This guy also owns a Ford GT40 and S63 AMG, and has the #001 Martin Modified 727 hp 700tq 2010 Camaro seen on Martin Motorsports webpage. He is also building a 1000 hp Cadillac as we speak.
