my rear sway is off my 92 Z right now (waiting for poly bushings for rear) and I noticed handleing go way down. cornering just sucks i can't push the car that hards... not as flat through the corners... feels like the front is flat and the rear is twisting up or something... hard to explain... it's just not right.

anyhow

well .. ripley .. believe it or not .. most racers don't run a rear sway bar . like the original post says , the rear sticks better . if you think about it , when going around say a left turn .. the right side sags due to the centrifical force throwing the weight on that side ... and what does the sway bar do ???...but... lift the left wheel to compensate :\ ... lifting traction ...

The people I know that race Camaro's (including me) use a rear sway bar, but it might not always be the biggest one available. I've noticed the rear seems to stay planted better with the rear sway bar on. I see a lot of front wheel drive cars w/o a rear bar, but I think for our cars it helps handling.

the records set at Road Atlanta and Savanna with a 3rd gen in A-Sedan were both done WITHOUT a sway bar ... neither record has been touched yet ....

Road Atlanta .. AS 1:39.582 91.823 Michael K. Camaro 4/98 Natl...
Robeling Road (Savanna) .. AS Reese ***/Camaro ATL 1:19:766 09/09/97

back in the day I ran a Scirrocco ..FWD VW ... I used a MASSIVE rear sway bar and a tiny front bar ...

Is that why VW's are always lifting their rear inside tire? I'd like to read up on that record setting Camaro. Do you have any links to information on it?

I Had my rear bar off for a month for a painting. The car will hook better, better traction, however it will push more in certain conditions. Like 180 degree exit ramps in my case.

I busted a rear endlink during an auto-x school, and it really wasn't that noticable.

Good point TVP, I remember seeing in the administrative codes for Washington state that any vehicle that came with "anti-roll" devices must have them connected and functioning. That's not to say you couldn't legally change sizes, but legally it has to be there. It's probably a good idea to check the laws for whatever state you're in.

On a side note I don't think the earlier SC models came with a rear bar.

Early models like my 82 camaro SC didn't have a rear sway bar, but it had a really small front bar so the handling was fairly balanced. Just removing the rear bar will make your car push(tight). The rear won't try to come around on a hard corner. You could crank the wheel all the way in a hard corner going fast and slide right off the road(track) like the wheel was barely turned. If you do this you better know how to control a tight car, or you will end up sliding right off the road.

My rear sway bar end link snapped a few years back (sounded like hell). The night I went to get the replacement parts it was raining. Took the left from the light like I always do and just about spun out!! I was like holy cow that bar makes a huge difference.

Put the new end links on, tried the corner just like before and it stuck like glue. So I would get the thing back on. It serves some purpose or GM would have left it off ..... right?
