3rd gen steering Vs Rack and Pinion

From what I hear 3rd gens handle better than 4th gens with Rack and Pinion but a 3rd gen does not ride as soft as a 4th gen.

What do you think would happen in difference of handling if you put a rack and pinion steering setup in a 3rd gen?

thanks for your help. :hail: :hail: :hail:

youd drop about 40 lbs from the front of your car but gain one hell of a dent in your wallet :\ ... then you'd have to deal with bump steer .. something you can "tune"out of a 3g ..but a 4 g is basically stuck with since you can't more the inside tierods :\ like you can on a 3g setup and let's not get started on the "akerman" effects !!!

What is bump steer and the "akerman" effects??

If you convert a 3rd gen to rack and poin is there anything you can do that would get rid of them?

Thanks :hail: :hail: :hail:

bump steer is ... when your suspension extends and compresses the misalignment of the tierods to the lower a-frame causes the wheels to turn in and out ... causing you to steer in different directions as you go over bumps ...

Akerman effect is .. when you turn and travel in a circle , your inside tire is turning a smaller radius than the outside tire , so Mr Akerman invented a way to make your inside tire turn sharper than your outside tire ... this is why our cars (and most others)have a center drag link .... it pivots up and down .... and compensates for this angle ...

I would call it the 'normal' suspension. Unless you race, I can't see the gain in going with a rack. Since nobody makes a kit yet, it will take a lot of modification and dollars for it to work correctly. With very little gain IMO. It's a completely different steering suspension.

I actually prefer the gear box steering of my car to the rack setup in my friend's 84 vette.

Umm... I experience bumpsteer in my 91 all the time with my 245's. I'm about to redo the front suspension, hopefully it gets better, but I definitely have it.

That is not true. PARacing makes a Rack and Pinion setup for thirdgens. But, it is still megabucks ($675 + price of K-Member!!!). Here is a pic ...

Here are some pics of the kit installed in an thirdgen. Before you ask - NO This is not my car.

Not sure what you are asking, but the rack and pinion doesn't have a steering box like a regular suspension. The rack and pinion does all the work.

Not really a much of a kit when you have to replace the K-member.

Umm...

I think it could, but I would worry if there was enough room to put the power steering unit thing in the car. It is a tight place

Power steering requires a power steering pump and either a steering box OR a rack and pinion that is manufactured to work with a power steering pump. The PA kit is a MANUAL rack and pinion and therefore will not work as a power steering unit.

Actually, I spoke to the PA racing guys and they said if I was interested, they'd try and figure out a way to get a power rack in there. I have bad arms, so manual steering wasn't an option. I decided for the moment to just stick with the recirculating ball.

The real question is how much is bump steer an issue with this setup, and tell them to get on with finding us a power rack to fit.

Ok well I got the bright idea to just call them, he said that they supply a bump steer kit with the rack setup so it wont be an issue, also said the steering isnt very stiff at all due to the rack bein 18:1, but if we want power steering he can supply the K member with mounts for a 4th gen rack and we just cut down the rods a few inches to fit.

I believe that the only difference in the ps rack and pinoin and a manual version would be the ps pump (obviously) and the number of teeth on the pinoin. I could be wrong, its happened before, but that should be it except for some details I would think.

Yea that and generally a "manual" rack and pinion kinda doesnt have fittings for power assist.........
