Dat's da Brakes!!
Dat's da Brakes!!
Guys got a brake question...just picked up this 92 z-28 with 45,000 miles on it...well the brakes are to say the least not very responsive..i mean they will stop the car but you really have to put your foot into it..its not a soft pedal...and it does not go all the way to the floor...could it be that the brake fluid is just plain wornout? the color of the fluid looks like hersheys chocolate milk..lol...maybe the power booster or master cylinder?..not sure...any suggestions would be appreciated...thanks guys.

Hershey's chocolate milk? Ewww... reminds me of a car I did that the brake fluid had the color and consistancy of 10,000 mile motor oil...
I'd flush the hell out of the system before doing anything else. Empty most of the master cylinder with a turkey baster or something similar and replace with fresh fluid, then bleed 'till you get clean stuff at each wheel...

...and if you're buying new calipers, ya might as well go all the way and replace the brake hoses now. They deteriorate internally, and clog up, and then the car yanks to the side when you hit the brakes. Wouldn't it suck to replace the calipers (and un-do the brake hose), and then wind up having to replace the front brake hoses a month later?? (Replace both at the same time, they're about $25 each).
If you want a snazzy tool that's worth every penny, check out http://www.brakebleeder.com - I bought the V12 (w/smart pak) when I was working on my rear discs, I wish I had it earlier. Bleeding is easy as hell now, and, I -know- there's no air being introduced anywhere.
