KYB shocks/struts vs stock units

ok i need to redo my suspension in my RS cause it handles like **** and i want a little bit sportier of a ride.now im on a limited budget so i was looking at the KYB shocks in summit.first question in how much firmer are these than the shocks on,say,a Z28 or IROC/TA?the RS shocks are a joke so i wont even mention those.and second question is which line is better, the gas-a-just or the GR2?i want the firmest of the two.thanks for any help guys!

Are you asking to compare to a stock unit, as in, a 10 year old unit? Or do you mean getting a strut from GM?

i used the kyb gr2 struts, they are pretty firm, i like them. they give me good cornering, since the guy before me removed the front sway bar?( i have no idea why). It will be going back in as soon as i get one. But the gr2 struts are really good. The gas-a-just are more for general driving, the gr2's are stiffer.

I'm curious as to how everyone that has the GR-2 likes them too, since they seem to be an economical way to replace the factory shocks/struts!

I haven't been able to decide what coil springs to go with yet & there seems to be lots of different brands that people use on their cars. The Eiback seem fairly popular, but I'm not wanting the car to drop too much from factory height. I do know the factory IROCs seemed slightly lower than the factory Z28s!

Any comments?

I know everyone here likes KYBs, but when I bought new shocks and struts for the Formula, I went a little different and got Monroe Sensa Tracs. I've only driven it about 10 miles since replacing them (and the springs, as the front still sits a little high ), but the handling was night and day compared to my factory 104k mile units...for obvious reasons!! But I am happy with the Monroes...they were originally priced about $5 ea more for fronts and $3 ea more for rears than KYBs, but Monroe was having a $50 discount when you bought a set. So I figured hey, more expensive shocks for less can't be bad, right??

The Monroes may be set up a little softer than KYBs, but you can't tell. Car handles awesome. I ain't keeping them anyways...Bilsteins will go in after grad school

Hey Jason, how's the Formula doing? Better than the 'ol V6 was?

I have the Monroe Sensatracs now, and they made a huge improvement in the car's handling when I put them on in '97, over 100,000 miles ago. Now it seems they're worn out. I can make the front of my car bounce like a rabbit on cocaine if I push up and down on the fender! (Monroe's come with a lifetime warranty, I think I've exceeded what the usual "lifetime" of a car is!) I could probably get new Monroe's for free, but I'm thinking about the KYB GR-2 units as well. The KYB AGX adjustables look nice, but I don't think I need all that fancy stuff.

Resistance85TA, are you sure the Gas-A-Just's are for regular driving? I think the Gas-A-Just's are under higher pressure than the GR-2's... but there's no Gas-A-Just front struts for our 3rd gens.

I'm going to look into "regular" Koni's and the Edelbrock units, to see if they're available for our front struts.

Hey Tom!

Well, the RS lives on, albeit dirtier and now, smoked in It went to a 16 yr old girl as her second car, after she smashed her Probe up 2 weeks before No, I do not expect my car to have a healthy life going forward...but I do have the memories.

The Formula is far more entertaining to drive, but much more painful to look at. Whereas the RS was pristine, the Formie's a little rusty...at least the inside just needs a scrubbing and a few small things. At least now it handles awesome with new stabilzer links, shocks, struts and springs (while the front end sways in the breeze 3/4" higher than the rear

Until May '04, this thing will look about the way it does now...after grad school is when the fun begins This ones a keeper for sure!!!! How many 1 owner TPIs are left out there that you can grab for a grand that only need body work??

I just can't pass up a deal
