One coil cut, 245 tires.(87 TA) How bad will it rub?
This is on an 87 Trans am and I'de like to cut one full coil from the front and rear stock coil springs to lower it some. It has 245/16 tires and everything else is stock suspension wise.
How bad will it rub/scape?
Thanks,
Donnie

i just cut a full coil from my fronts and a full coil +2" from the rears. it lowered the car about an inch all the way around and with 255 50 16's on all four corners, it only rubs with the wheel at full lock. even when they do rub, its not bad at all
Thanks alot bro! When you say that you cut one full coil plus 2 inches, do you mean 2 more inches around the spring? If so, is that just so the car would sit even?
Thanks alot,
Donnie
P.S. Are you running the stock springs?

damn, i posted a reply yesterday. I wonder what happened to it. Oh well, here we go again
. The reason i cut more off of the rear is because there is no weight on the back end of the car so to lower it the same as the front, you have to remove more material from the spring. I cut one full coil, then i cut an additional 2" or so off of the next coil. I would have liked to make only one cut, but i was using a biiiig grinder and i couldn't get the wheel in there so i just made 2 cuts. Yes i do have the stock springs. If anything is unclear, let me know and i will try to clarify it for you. later man.

I just did it as a temporary thing until i get some Eibach springs. People say you can do some pretty bad things to the suspension by cutting springs.

Well I have 245/50/16's on my car. And I have a 3" drop all around and mines doesnt rub any. So one coil being cut off shouldnt' do anything.

My advice is go slow on those front springs after you whack that first coil out of there. I did it on one of my old 82' firebirds and ended up with a front suspension just sitting on the bump stops. I went 1/2 coil, reassemble, not enuff. 1/2 more, still not nuff. Screw it I thought and whacked 1 more coil, almost there. 1/4 coil, sitting on the on bump stops.
It turns out when you reassemble it,. you've got to get the suspension to settle. My car was a v6 with Iroc springs all around. Heres a pic of my GTA with Bell Tech spindles (2" drop) up front and 1.25 coils off the rear springs. I think it needs about .5 - 1" more drop in the rear, but I've got to fix the fuel pump first.
