E Brake adjust ?>

I've got an old style rear disc setup on the 9 bolt I am swapping in. I pulled the e brake cables from the junkyard when I got my rear end, but when I put them in my car the drivers side is too long by about an inch at the adjuster end. When I tighten the adjuster the passenger lever on the caliper moves off of its stop way before the drivers side. So I thought, well if I get new cables it should be fine right? The new ones I bought today have the same freaking problem. So is it supposed to be that way? Any suggestions on how to solve this one? (And no, I am not switching to '89 and up discs)

Thanks
