rear axle code
Well I got under the axle and wire brushed the heck out of it. And these are the numbers I found stamped on the passenger side:
3jh c189 2 - (this is an 86)I looked through all the codes for axles and there is nothing even close to this. Obviously these are not the numbers. Where are you guys finding these numbers stamped? I found these stamped on the passenger side axle tube, front. Please let me know where you all found yours and post some pics to give me an idea of where it may be or some direction (right above sway bar) Thanks everyone.

That is the correct location. The first thing I thought is that maybe the "3" was not stamped well and could be an "8". There is still not any 8jh of any year.
2jh(1982), 4jh & 5jh(1983's), 6jh(1984-85) all are 3.23 standard (non-posi) axles in my Camero book.
Axle codes that started with 8 are all in years 1986, 1990 & 1991. There is an 8hj(90-91) that also is 3.23 Std.
Thats all I can help, sorry. ???

Who cares?
What is it you want to know? Take the cover off and look, there are no secrets that way.
Have you changed the fluid lately? Then you need to take the cover off and change the fluid. While you're there, look at what you've got, then you'll know more than the "codes" can ever tell you.

I hate work. I hate to see people waste their time and effort on useless trivia.
Nobody is attacking anybody, I'm trying to help you by directing you away from pointless self-abuse and straight toward the source of real truth. If your rear end has a non-existent "code", then the "code" .... doesn't exist. Screw the codes, instead of troubling yourself with something you can't depend on, go directly to where the thing you need to know really is, and be done with it.
If you want to know what gear your car has, take off the cover and look. If you want to know if your car has a posi, take off the cover and look. etc. "Codes" are worthless: people swap rear ends, dealers swap them under warranty, people change gears, and on and on. There are so many posts on this BBS about "the code says I'm supposed to have so and so, instead i have such and such" or "I ordered this thing that matched the code, but it doesn't fit", "why do I have a 2-series carrier when the code says I have 3.23s" etc. Granted, someone who hasn't fooled with old cars very much might not realize just how worthless the codes really are, but that doesn't change the basic fact that they are worthless. All they tell you (if you're lucky enough that they tell you anything at all) is what the factory put in whatever car that rear end came in, it doesn't tell you a thing about what's in your car now.
I'm driving around a 83 car with a 91 or 92 rear with 3.73 gears in it, which weren't available in 91 or 92 at all as far as I know. I can just see the look on somebody's face when they "decode" mine and then discover the truth.
I was in a instant oil change type place the other day, turns out the factory's recommended fluid change interval in a rear end is 7500 miles. Not even I change my fluid that often; but have you changed yours recently? If not, then it probably needs it. And if it doesn't have synthetic lube in it, then you're getting a good solid mile per gallon less than you could be getting. That's as good an excuse as any I've ever found to take off the cover and look.

It saddens me to think that a NEW "Junior" member to these boards, and possibly new to these cars. Is greeted by such open hostility by a very experienced and respected member as;

5,296 posts means that this member knows more about these cars than I do, and I thought I knew a lot!
I am sure we can greet new members better. Not everyone has such a high level of experience.
