Steering Column Problem
Steering Column Problem
'88 Formula 350 w/ only 86,000 on the clock. Steering wheel has massive bouncing problem over rough road surfaces. It almost feels like it is worn out in the tilt mechanism or something like that. Steering column has a lot of play in it when you grab the wheel and push up or down. Anyone ever come across this problem or have any ideas about what it can be before i go and tear it all apart? thanks
Its a fun job
. GM tilt columns have 3 screws buried way underneath all the other crap on the column ( under the horn, steering lock, ignition switch, turn signal, tilt lever, and hazard switch if I'm not missing anything). Two of the screws you can get at fairly decently but the 3rd top one is a b*tch. They just naturaly work themselves loose and have to be retightened every couple of years depending on how much you drive and how hard you wrench on the wheel in corners and getting in and out of the car.

www.snapon.com i think and buy a deep torx socket, not a bit but actual socket, E8 or E10 i believe. it'll make it a lot easier to get at.

There is a tech article on how to fix it. I had my local mechanic fix it for $80 sounded like a deal to me considering the Chevy dealer wanted $220 to do it. $80 was worth it to me considering it would probally take me a weekend to fix it, with grief and agrivation.
