Is it possible to fit a 315/35 on 17x9.5 rim??
Is it possible to fit a 315/35 on 17x9.5 rim??
I really want to get 315/35 BFG street slicks on new rims. All the rims Im interested in are 17x9.5 but the tire calls for a 10-12" rim. Will the .5" difference really matter? s it possible to mount this tire safely? Has anyone done this? Im not too sure but I think I mounted the stock VR50 tires on a 16x8 rim when it was supposed to be mounted on a 16x7 (car's at home Im at school--can't check).
DON'T DO IT !!!!!!!
Physically it will fit on the Rim, but will be way out of spec and look crappy too.
You need AT LEAST a 10" rim for a 315, and preferrably an 11" rim.
Don't try to stuff a 315 on a 9.5" rim.

i work at a large chain of tire shops in michigan (Belle Tire), and my opinion is that with a tire like a BFG, you shouldnt have any problems. a half inch difference will bring in both beads by .25. i would say go for it....and if they dont fit....they're drag tires, you dont get a heck of alot of miles out of them anyways, so you wont have to deal with them for too long.

I would say give it a try also. I have a set of 16x9.5 c4 vette wheels and have a pair of 325/35/16's bfg road race slick's mounted on them. They fit but kinda pull out a little like JF023 said. I think they look ok though. My only problem is they don't fit under my car yet. I have yet to buy my spacer's yet (2" from Skulte)
I'm with TTA on this one. Everything I've looked at has said 11" wheels for 315s. While you may be able to slap them on a 9.5" wheel, they're going to be pulled in so much that you may as well just have some 275s on there anyways. While there may not be any risks involved with going out of spec, your WILL affect the performance capabilities of the tire, then you're throwing that extra money out the window.

So what would be the best size to use on a 9.5" wheel? I have the Z06 wheels and they are 9.5", i have 17's all around, so what tire size would you recommend for a drag radial?

Dont' do it.
You will get so much roll during hard driving they will be unsafe. I've seen people do this on LS1's and it's not a good idea. If you want to run 315's you really need 17x11's.

So if i switch to a drag radial i should get the stock size, being 275/40/17's? I would also ask the "tech" dept from where i would be purchasing the tires too! thanks

Size matters
I have Hoosier 315/35/17 in 9.5" Vette rims for autocross. They do roll some. I only did it because I got the Hoosiers cheap.
Late model C4 vettes came with 285's mounted on 9.5" for a good fit.

Here's what 315/35/17 Nitto Drag's look like on the back of my, get this fellas, 9" rim!! That's right, not 10, not 11, but 9" rim. They fit fine, and I hook like a champ on the street whether I'm running 28psi in them (for just cruising) or 12psi in them for racing nights.

And here is another shot of my truck from the back and you can see the tire/rim combo.

I say go for it, I don't think it looks bad at all. People always talk about horror stories of them coming off wheels...I've had my pressure at less than 8 before driving around on them and never had any problem. I've got more than one friend with and LS1 that has them on a 9" or 9.5" rim.

Here is my 295/35-18 on a 10” rim. The sidewall is perfect in my opinion. My recommendation for a 315 would be an 11” wheel. Just my .02
Here's a good comparison opportunity. Check out ReddRocket's pic and compare it to the second pic in Blown4now's post. Not trying to pick on you Blown4now, but if you look at your pic, the tire has a more rounded appearance to it where it transitions from tread to sidewall. On ReddRocket's tires, the tread is very level and the edge between the tread and sidewall is very sharp. This is ideally what any tire should look like on a properly matched wheel. Again, I don't declare any sort of risk involved with what you are doing. In fact, I don't believe there is any risk. I believe you when you say you hook up great as well. I just question whether you are hooking up any better then if you put a 275/40 tire on those wheels. Or if you would hook up even better with an 11 inch wheel on those tires.
I'd also just like to qualify my posts here with the fact that I'm looking at this from a street/handling perspective, NOT a drag racing perspective. If you're looking for a good drag racing setup, then 15" wheels with DOT drag tires are the way to go. If you're looking for a good handling setup, then matching the tire and wheel size is a very important step in such a setup.

a guy at the track today had 305 tires on stock gta wheels.
They didn't seem to stick out too far from the wheels or anything, but he was only pulling a 2.05 60'. He had a 383 w/ a 5speed, and droped tire pressure. I think going with a tire that is too wide for the rim might actually hurt performance. I was pulling better shorties w/ 245s, stock tc, and a 350. 275's would probibly be best.
