Value of '89-'92 rear axle

I just need opinions on what a used complete '89-'92 10-bolt disc posi rear end would cost. I would like to swap my J42 2.73 drum rear out for discs.

Any experiences in this matter would be helpful. Also since those rear ends are much-sought-after parts, how long of a search do you envision?

How well does AndyZ28's 1LE+ CD address questions such as mine? I am thinking about purchasing it, because I am planning a 1LE conversion.

Thanks for answering my questions.

That is one of the most sought-after parts for these cars...

Expect to pay anywhere from $350 to $750 depending on how "complete" you want it to be, and where you are, and who you have to get it from.

It was a direct swap-in to my 83, except I had to get the last 6" or so of the car's brake line before the rubber hose, and cut & splice the metric line onto my SAE system. Other than that, everything hooked up and works perfectly; the parking brake cables just plugged right in and hardly even needed adjustment; the MC & PV for the PBR system is the same as the one for drums, so no change was needed there; I did have to swap gears though, the one I got had 3.23s, and I wanted to retain my stock 3.73s. I tore mine down to a completely naked housing, had all the parts sandblasted & powder-coated, the axle tubes welded up, etc. etc.; when I put it back together I used a Auburn Prop posi, all new bearings (duh), a crush sleeve eliminator, and a stud girdle.

try and see whats on the classifieds here, even try ebay or thirdgen resource or hawks thirdgen parts..

actually some people get rid of there 10 bolt in order for a 9 bolt.. people say the 9 bolt cant take more power and abuse but the parts cost alot for it...

but i also see 10 bolts taking their fair share of abuse and power!

i like my 10 bolt in my car, gm must of liked the 10 bolt because they put it in the later thirdgen's like my car..

You're looking at $250 (deal) to $300-400 depending on ratio, complete. I've seen 4th gen 3.23 complete rears go for less than $300 on ebay, but they're located in Minnesota or someplace out in BFE.

Ed

PS: Andy's CD covers everything very well. I have it...

If you are willing to keep your 2.73 ratio or even wait a while and swap in the SLP posi and gears, the 10 bolt rear brake swap might be a good option for you (covered in Andy's CD).

RB, thanks for your opinions. I am looking for something close to completely. I intend to have the housing blasted and powdercoated. New gears and an aftermarket posi would be good too. I will get the axle tubes fully welded and add good back cover also. In short, total rebuild. I like to do things right the first time.

I guess if I'm serious I need to start a ardent search.

Ed, I think I really need to get that CD. I guess I be going to Spohn's site to purchase it. I am not interested in 4th gen. rears because of the added track width. It just doesn't look right. Modifying my present system's backing plates for discs is an option, but I own a 1992 GTA. I like to make modifications that are fairly easily returned to stock. An entire rear end swap is more attractive.

Posi is short for posi-traction. Its a limited-slip differential. It helps give even power to both wheels.

Steve, I'm in South Carolina. I may be interested. Is the '89 a 10-bolt? From my sources an '89 3.27 posi rear disc would be originally from 350 Auto car. If you want to talk further, then let's go to PM.

That's what I initially thought.

Then I checked a bad reference that made no differentiation between 3.23's and 3.27's. Should have at least checked a Haynes/Chilton manual. One of the two has a good chart that even includes the three letter factory codes.

I will continue to search though. Thanks.

In your situation, it might be easier to simply convert your current rear axle over to disc brakes. It is a very popular conversion.

Thanx,ANDYZ28
