Springs? So many ways, so little time.

I am installing lowering springs on my 89 RS. I need help of figureing out the best way to do the front springs. I can swap a 4 gens springs in no time, so I do not need advice on the rear. I have heard of so many differant ways of doing this I am now confused.

I'm not sure what point of the picture was, but anywho. . . . . .

The hardest part is either breaking the ball joint loose or getting the strut bolts out of the spindle. Either way you do it its a PITA. Sometimes you have to take off the rotors on the front so you have enough room to slide the strut to spindle bolts out.

If you don't feel like messing w/ wheel bearings, then pop the ball joint and just press on the lower A arm. Then pry them little bastards out of there.

Make sure when you unbolt the strut or the ball joint, that you have a jack under the A arm. Otherwise you could get hurt. Seriously.

If you have access to a lift, I would suggest unbolting the lower control arms from the frame. This is how I did my springs. It does require unbolting the idler arm, and a lot of prying, so I wouldn't do it this way on jackstands. It took me 45 minutes per side doing it this way on a lift.

I've changed the springs several times in both of my Irocs and haven't ever used a lift or anything special. Just a jack (or 2) and several jackstands. I always just disconnect everything and then have a jack under the a-arm and then slowly lower it to unload the spring. Once it unloaded it probably still won't just slide out so you will have to either pry it out or just grab the bottom of the spring and yank it out. Then just throw the new spring in there, and jack the a-arm back up. I've done this with both lowering springs and stock springs, its a little bit trickier with stock springs but neither is really that bad. Just take your time and you should be fine.
