My question to you guys, is their an aftermarket steering box that is really good, for the price and performance?
or should I just go w/ an Autozone/Advanced Auto steering box.
either way the cheapest one they have is 200 bux.
So i was basically going w/ the theory of if you are gonna replace it, might as replace it w/ something better.

I went with the AGR box a while back and wasn't all that thrilled with it. First the steering wheel was way off center, about 90*, and the feel to it was really light instead of that tight feeling I was used to. Then that car was wrecked (bent the steering knuckle) and I tried the same box in my next car. The wheel couldn't be straightened and there was way too much slop in it then.
Just my 2 cents.

you know what.... I am probably just gonna take it the dealer. this is a serious problem when i feel unsafe driving it.... rather get it done right and pay an *** load, then to get it done halfassed and pay twice.
I'll think i'll give the dealership a call tomorrow.

Thats not what I am saying at all. The AGR box uses a different internal pressure spring that makes it feel lighter in the wheel. The stock performance boxes use a spring/valve that gives a heavier feel to the wheel. It all depends on what both of your boxes started out at. If it started light and went heavy over time, or vice-versa, then I would say that it is near the end of its life. Otherwise I'll assume that it is OK.
What kind of effort is involved with replacing the steering box? I got an '85 with about 160000 miles. I just rebuilt most of the front, and my steering box seems to have a lot of play. Too much for my taste and more than it used to.

The hardest part is to pull apart and reconncect the power steering hoses. Once you manage to get them out, getting them to line back up is a chore. It is absolutely doable for a backyard mechanic, but patience is the key for those hoses. It is also helpful if you have a second person to help line up the steering column from the top while you are pushing the box up from the bottom.
