1LE gas tank, still available?

is it possible to get a 1LE gas tank still? and are the 4th gen 1LE gas tanks baffled like the thirdgens? id like to swap to the plastic gas tank of the 4th gen if i replace mine. but the baffling will be nice for hard cornering with low fuel levels.

From what I understand, starting in 1990 ALL F-bodies received the baffled fuel tank. So, any GM replacement tank you buy should be baffled.

I have heard mention that the 1LE cars got an 18 gallon tank instead of the 16 gallon standard tank, but I don't think this is true. The 1LE's also were supposed to have a higher volume fuel pump and wider, dual-screen pick-up so they can run down to 1/2 gallon without any fuel starvation while cornering.

I thought the 1LE used the same tank BUT different PUMP and a SWINGING pickup...the swinging pickup was the key because if the fuel sloshed to 1 side during hard cornering the Pickup went with it....

My 87 GTA had a baffled tank in it for what its worth....its stock 87 tank..

FWIW,

my 90, the gauge moves as i turn, and accell, ect.

but i have had it down to almost ZERO gas, and can still lay it out around corners without even a hickup from the fuel system.

The 1LE fuel tank is supposed to use a different pick-up (wider - dual strainer design) and higher volume pump, in addition to the baffling. As I mentioned earlier, the baffled tank became standard for all f-bodies from 1990 to 1992.

I've never physically seen any of these parts to verify for sure what is special about them. I have run the part numbers thru Dal a Vandevere Pontiac and they come up as available in his computer. Someone would have to do a side-by-side visual comparison to confirm everything that's been written about the 1LE tank.

Dang you guys!!! You are going to make me have to go find a 90 or up car in the bone yard and check this out for myself.

And then if a 90 tank is baffled I'm going to have to change my 87 tank out. Thanks a bunch for creating all this work for me

(joke-ok?)

Here's an old thread I started on this some time back:
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...t=baffled+tank

You'll note in the 5th post that Kevin91Z has a link to pics showing the inside of the baffled tank.

Well I picked up a fuel tank this weekend out of a 91 GTA and it's definately different than my stock 87 tank. Has loads of baffeling in it, and a kind of plastic "box" at the rear of the tank. I got the tank and sending unit/pump assembly for $70. Am going to put my high volume fuel pump from a GM syclone in the tank before putting it in my car. And, got a new fuel strainer from auto zone for about $5. Part# FS22 The GM one I think is around $15-$17 and the zone had this one in stock. And not to mention there is a cute gal working at the zone I go to

Anyway I was going to try and use my stock 87 pump and pickup in the new tank, but they sold me the sending unit and pump for $20 extra, so I figured what the heck and bought it too. Not sure if they are different from the ones in my 87, but suspect they are from what others have said in the post about these tanks. When I change the tank out, I'll post some picks of the sending unit/pump side by side so everyone can see the difference if any.
