tire and subframe connect?

I have an 87 formula. I would like to lower the car 1 1/2"- 2". If I did this could I run 275/45/17 out back without clearence problems? If I didn't lower the car could I run those out back without clearance problems?

Where can I find reasonably priced subframe connectors? (ones that don't require me to modify the rear frame)

Thanks in advance
Bob

Yes, all you need to do is make sure the wheel you plan to put it on has the right backspacing/offset. My brother used to have a set of 275's on his car mounted on a set of 90 Vette wheels w/ 2.25" or 2.5" bolt on spacers. His car was lowered right at 2.5" fornt & rear. Now he's running 315's back there and all he did was roll the inside of the wheel well to avoid rub.

Yes, see above.

I have a set of South Side Machine SFC's and the welded right in with no problems at all. I dont think that any of the SFC's out there require modification of the rear frame for installation. I don't know where you can get the South Side frames anymore (Summit doesn't carry them anymore), but they only set me back $160. Spohn makes great stuff, and his frames get a lot of good hype on this board.

Good Luck

GTA-SPD,
Thanks for the help.

So when I order new wheels how much backspacing should I tell them I need? Is there a way to figure it?

I don't know the numbers off the top of my head, but you can take some measurements with a tape and figure it out. Leave about .25-.5 inches between the tire and the closest thing it can rub for deflection purposes. Figure out what your backspacing is on your current wheel, and go from there. If you are buying off the rack, you'll have to take what they make, but if you are special ordering wheels, they should be able to give you whatever backspacing you need. Do a search for '17" wheel offset' or something similar to that, and you might get lucky and get numbers to use, but you can figure it out pretty easy with a tape, and a little time.
