Clunk Clunk

If i hold one of my rear tires and pull back and forth it makes a clunking noise, and when i go over a bump, it makes the same noise. The rear end is moving when i push and pull on it. I checked the lug nuts for tightness, and they are. What could be making it move like that?

The panhard bar bushings could be shot specially if it does it while driving. Mines does that also but i have a new panhard bar just havnt installed it yet.

yeah that movement might be due to the panahard bar, or maybe that side's axle is moving in and out, or even both. but if the whole rear end is moving definitely look into the panhard bar.

Yes its that bar and its really not unsafe unless ur doin alot of fast cornering. U could tell if it was bad by moving the rear end from side to side and seeing play in it

Agood here,

Its not the panhard, its your axles that have play in them near the carrier pin and axle c-clip area. As the carrier pin ages, more play develops in the floating c-clip axle design and the lateral knock becomes more previlant. Even with a new carrier/carrier pin, you will still get a lateral knock or clunck on a 10-bolt c-clip style rearend.

Dean- going, going, gone......again

the rear end is moving from side to side, atleast from what i can tell, it moves the same amount with i pull on either tire. Still need to know if the panhard bar is interchangeable

Yes they are interchangeable. Even a 4th gen one would work, V6 or V8 - they are all the same.

My panhard rod made a lot of noises but that is because I had the rod end on the wrong side. I took it off and flipped it around and everything went away.

It'll be back. When you tightened it up you're only holding the bushing with a clasp force that is completely normal to the actual forces being applied to the bushing. Trust me, it'll work for a while but will need to be tightened up every few thousand miles or less depending on driving style/conditions. Tight tolerances isn't one of the big 3's goals in auto making. The just do it cheaper than everone else and hide stuff like this with crappy bushings. At least change the bushings out with new. Also be certain that the bolt being used is a close tolerance with the sleeve in the bushing! I'd replace the bolts if they're badly rusted which many of them are. Right now I've got a loose LCA because when I installed the relocation brackets, Spohn's kit only came with 4 bolts to replace the bolts on the rear end side, not on the body side. It was really pathetic how rusted up the bolts got and how much material disappeared.

Where is it better to place a rod-end (if using bar with one end bushed and another "joint-type")? Attached to body or better to the axle?
