Hi, I was just wondering if anyone else has run across this problem. I attempted to install my Alston SFCs the other day. I only tried the passenger side.
I ran into a problem. My passenger side front frame rail is 3" wide, the SFC mounting plate is only 2-3/4" wide at the bottom, and 3" wide at the top. So basically the bracket on the connector is not wide enough to fit around my frame rail. The bracket can be slipped on until it gets too narrow, it then leaves about 3/4" of an opening between the frame rail and the bracket. The rear bracket of the SFC fits perfectly. I have not atempted to install the drivers side yet.
It does not appear to me that the pass. side piece will work without some serious modifications (making a new bracket and removing the old one), cutting and welding. All of the other clearences are fine. FYI I also had several other people including two mechanics look at it and all came to the same conclusion...its not going to fit
Also, my car is a 1984 TransAm built 7/84. It has never had any changes to the frame (accidents, bent, ect...) The frame is very solid and original to the car.
It does not appear that the bars were bent or damaged in shipping. Just wondering if anyone else had any experience w/ this.

I have heard of some problems with these frame connector's, you should try a search and you will find some more info about people's install problems.

Hey Dan, im havin the same kinda problem but i think its on the driverside for me. im thinkin of heatin up the base plate with a torch and then bending and basiclly making it wider so it will fit snug.

 

When I put mine on I had one end mount that was slightly tapered and a little narrow at the bottom......but it was less than 1/8" too narrow so I just beat it into place with a 32oz hammer and welded it on up.

 

i would think using a floor jack should pop it right up into place and you can weld it up then.

 

those last 2 post give me a few ideas comparied to mine

 

i had the same problem when i installed mine on two different camaros. i just used a hammer and a floor jack to press it against the frame.

After all of the beating and bending, could you still bolt them in??

 

actually i don't think he bought the bolt in kit...i believe he bought the weld in kit.

but still no news back on how it worked out so far.

 

i bolted mine in. never did get right against the frame but still was alot stiffer installed.

I have the bolt in type. I plan to have them welded in the spring. I spoke with Mike @ Alston and he was helpful, he actually made my bars. Unfortunetly he was closed so I will try again today and hopefully get this figured out.

 

I had the same problem. I talked to Alston and we agreed that I could drive up there and have it checked, then have it welded in for a fee if I wanted.

I've been driving around with only the driver's side SFC on since November

 

Nape, did you ever have your passenger side bar checked by Alston to see if it would fit?

I have not had a chance to call them back yet and finish our conversation, but when I did talk to them, they were very helpful.

 

I have spoken to Alston about subframes for my TTA. The said their right side won't fit on my car. The down pipe is in the way. Mike said that they could install the left and build me a custom right side for $400-$500 ( I live 40 miles from them). I can weld in my own subs, but making one is a whole 'nother story. Let us know what you think of your trip there, and how long they take to weld yours in.
