I eventually plan on putting a ls1/T-56 combo in my car and doing some work to that. For 500 hp and torque, what would be a good rear end that could handle that? I had planned on doing the 4th gen swap, but have read it really is no better than our rear and only makes the wheels stick out. What is everyones opinion? Thanks

well heres a word about the 4th gen rear , the zl1 camaros that gm made 69 of had that same rear end, they had 4.56 gears but they had the rear end. If u put some 4.10 s in it , it should last . I have a chrysler 8 3/4 in my car . It was a custom job by me and my grandfather. THe 12 bolt is what a lot of guys use. i would rather have the 9 inch ford over the12 bolt.

I been running a 12 bolt last two years and it seema to be holding up well.Several hundred passes in the 11's and the last 90 or so in the 10's(60ft's in the 1.47-1.49 range).

If you were using an auto I'd say get a 12 bolt but with a stick I'd do a 9",and depending on how hard you hook and shift you'll still break it.I know plenty of LS1 guys that were tearing up rears with manuals, then some went to auto's and they stayed together(went quicker too )

the rear from a 69 f body isn't the same as a 4th gens. a 4th gens is like a 3rd gens, long as they're both 10 bolts. there were dana 44 and 9 bolts in 3rd gens too. you wouldn't see any preformance or strength gain going ot a 4th gen rear. depending on what all you already have in your 10 bolt i'd consider strengthing it and running it untill it breaks instead of dropping a couple grand on a 12 bolt or 9".

ede u misunderstood me. i meant the new zl1 camaros. THe 2002 zl1 camaro, they used the stock rear end with 4.56s and some had 600 hp . so they are strong.

No they are not!! The stock 10 bolt beefed up is still marginal, there is nothing you can do to the 7 1/2 7 5/8" rears to make them that strong

So when I do go with a new rear end, I should go with the 9"? Did these come on some of the 3rd gens? If not, what would i find them on? Thanks

The strongest production 3rd gen rear is the 9 bolt borgwarner. However they are scarce and parts are hard to find and expensive. Any 12 bolt or 9 inch is stronger than the 9 bolt or 10 bolt but there has never been a production 12 bolt or 9 inch for our cars. There was a dana 44 that i think SLP sold for a while but they also are of qustionable strength. Your best bet in my opinion is to get a moser 12 bolt for your car. The 12 bolt is supposed to be slightly more efficient than the 9 inch and from what i have read the 9 inch might interfere with the floor in some cases.

There should be plenty of info on this board if you search some.

i have had great luck with my faster f-bodies by using the 2nd gen 8.5 rear end with a custom torque arm bracket,3.73s and moseur axles and c-clip eliminators the same size rear end can be found in the t-type or gn from 86-87 they are plenty strong when built up like this....

GM did not make any F-Bodies with a FORD 9" Rear on them.

Best bet is to go uy a moser Housing and build one up yourself...Or justt have moser build the rear and dropit right in... Same for a 12Bolt...
