how to tell if ford 9" is 28/31 splin

Is there anyway to tell if a ford 9" rear is a 28 or 31 spline without tearing into it?

pulling an axle from a 9" is about as simple as it gets. there is no other way to tell spline count that i know of other than pulling the axle.

Axle/Gears: moser 12 bolt, 4.11's 33 spline axl
ya take out the 4 bolts, slide out the axle, count the splines then put it back in
