shoe dampening spring- how to install?

I've got a '84 T/A with factory rear disk brakes that have the recall upgrade on them. Recently I've had to rebuild one of the calipers due to a leak, and when I pulled the caliper off I found that the caliper didn't have the shoe dampening spring on the end of the piston as was shown in the shop manual. Instead there was a circular spring that clipped on the back of the shoe.

Is this correct? Does this type spring supercede the old damping spring, or did someone down the line install the incorrect springs?

Thanks!
David
