test for shocks?

Engine: 355sbc/Demon650dp/hedmanheaders/
Transmission: t-5, alum DS
Axle/Gears: 3.42 torsen posi, baer discs
test for shocks?
anybody know a quick way to tell if a shock is done? if i can push the shaft into the housing with some resistance and the shaft rebounds when let go...does this mean it's done? on a new shock, can one push the shaft in? or is it really hard to move the shaft?
