are stearing components all metal?

Tie rods, idler arm, centerlink are all made of metal, correct?
Except for the rubber dust shield.

In particular moog brand.

Does any one know for sure?

What my plans are to power coat them if they are all metal so I will have to heat them to 450*.

Of course these would be new ones, no grease in them yet.

uhh, yea, most steering components are metal.. except the rag joint and steering column..

but.... when they're new, they already have grease in them. and they usually have rubber or plastic seals.

Yah.. I knew that the major components are metal, what I ment was all internal parts metal.

The rubber or plastic seals are you referring to the bonnet on the top of like a tie rod?

I went to the moog site and their cut away view shows all metal parts, but not a specific break down of ALL parts, just trying to figure it out.

I'd be interested in an answer to this as well. I am rebuilding the suspension now and have powder coated several parts, but am not sure about the tie rod components. My current plans are to just paint them for fear of damage to the ends. Also not sure what will happen when the curing heat causes the grease to leak out? possible fire hazard??

Maybe it would be worth experimenting with an old part in the oven just to see what happens. Of course, keeping a fire extinguisher handy just in case.

Novass, if you do try powder coating, could you post results?

I wouldn't powder coat them, I would just use Por-15. The parts are not designed to take that kind of heat. I just don’t think it’s worth the risk after all the last part on your car you want breaking is the steering.

Some steering components have plastic bushings in them. I can't be specific on the 3rd gens as to which do or do not. I found out about the plastic when the top cap on a '67 pitman arm popped off. The bushing inside was a hard plastic.

Shoot, I wished I saved my old linkage now; I could've sliced thru a few joints. Although, I have no idea what brand those original suspension pieces were...

Well I am replacing my steering linkages over the next week when I get time. When I am done I'll take my cutter to the old ones and see whats inside. I would powedercoat them if it were safe and I had access. But I think I'll stick with rustoleum or por
