you need it for a mud and snow rating? or is this a good weather only car?

Man buy a summer tire...those are all-season tires rated for mud and snow as mentioned (hence the M+S rating).

If you want 275/35R18 tires around your price, look at the Kumho Ecsta MX or the Yokohama AVS ES100 series. The Dunlop Direzza tires look interesting and cheap too. Could also save up some more money and spring for a pair of BFG KDW's.

i tried to point him to that direction, but he choose the M&S over the kumhos or yokohamas even. and i really pushed the yokos.

I would go with a good rain tire myself since you wont see snow or mud in it.

lol, all coming from people that haven't even tried these tires, or maybe they have?
Personally, the Nero's are the best tire I've had on my car for traction in both wet and dry. I've cut my best 60' times on these tires (2.02) with an autocross setup in a poorly prepped track. Looking at the test results of these tires and you'll see why I say they stick.
Although I got them because of the snow traction that neither Kumho or Yoko provide.
They tread wear is also excelent, it's been over a year of daily driving and the tread has at least another 2 years in em.
For the rears I'd get a matching set, if you don't like them take them off for some summer only tires that have wet traction.
0.92g's dry and 0.8g's wet, that's not too shabby for an M+S tire .
In your climate I'd have looked at the Potenza RE750's. Those tires work and are cheaper than the Pilot Exalto's. Both excellent tires according to a few of my racing friends.

I have them on my car, all the way around, on C6 wheels; 17s in front, 18s rear.

They seem to work fine. On wet streets they are as good as any other tires I've had, better than most; surprisingly good for something that wide. I haven't had the opportunity to compare them to anything else, on my car; I got wheels without tires, and bought a set of those.

Personally, on a car I use as a daily driver, the safety (survival) features of such a tire, are worth more than a couple of hundredths on a dry skid pad.

I have kuhmo's and RE750's on my cars. RE750's are all arround much better than the Kuhmo's. they handle better, are better in the rain, the sidewall is a little stiffer. the Kuhmo's are great for the $, but if your looking for handling, get the RE750's. They wear about the same. RE750's are way better at high speeds. If you have no cash, get the kuhmo's

The choice is yours
