So I'm in the market for new tires...
Now that I'm pretty much decided on some 17x9 ROH R/Ts, I'm in the market for new tires.
I've heard that wider tires (such as 275s) are going to be overall better-- better traction, better treadwear, better handling, and of course, they look cooler. They'll also fit near perfectly with my 9-inch-wide wheels, so I think that's a definite go...
The choice however is, what kind to buy. I care a lot about good handling, good traction in the rain, and good treadwear...I don't care as much about drag launches or snow traction.
I was looking at TireRack (this link shows all the 275/40-17 tires) and I'm wondering what tires you guys would recommend.
I was particularly looking at the Ecsta 712s, since they aren't incredibly expensive, and I've heard good things about them.
But if I can spend a few bucks more for a tire that really hauls ***, I'll go for it...
Thanks guys

I'm not sure if they come in the size you want, but I run Sumitomo HTR-Z tires on my 4th gen. They look great, and handle extremely well. I picked up mine off tire rack for 87 a piece. I know you dont care about snow traction, but a warning for anyone else... NEVER TAKE THEM IN THE SNOW. Bad things WILL happen

I live in NC and it snows maybe once a year, if that. If for some reason I need a car during a snowstorm, we have 4 other cars, two of them FWD, so I'm not too concerned...
I found the HTR ZII (its actually $4 cheaper than the original Z) for $117 and the 712s for $114...

I just bought two Nitto 450's to replace the crappy proxxes FZ4's that came on the car. They were $10 cheaper per tire than the Kumho 712's

Ditto, Kumhos are great for the $, but having run nitto 555r’s (their DR) on the street for 28K miles (yea, tread was gone at that point, but they were still drivable even in the rain, I replaced them because I ran over a chunk of steel putting about a 1” cut in one), I doubt that I’ll run much else when they’re available in the size I’m looking for… probably matching 555’s on the front or whatever.

I had the Kumho 712s on my car til I traded the rims. They are a decent tire. I'm sure the 275/40R17 series will be much better than my 245/50R16s that I had. If you can, spend a few more dollars and get the MX's ifyou want a cheap tire.
Then again, Nittos, from what I've seen, are very cheap tires. I have a pair of 555Rs and another pair of 555RIIs in my basement in 275/40R17 size. The 555Rs are pretty much "track-only" use at this point (little tread). I'm going to go with some 555's for the front in 255/40R17 size since I can get them for $130 each or so. That's not a bad price at all in my opinion..
