Widest tires on OEM 16"

I did search and did not find exactly what I was looking for.

I have an 86 TA with 15" wheels (and 255 back) but I have a full set of OEM 16" wheels I want use (not GTA style). I have heard that I can use 255/50R16 on the rear end and 245 in front.

I would like to have a little wider tires than that on the rear end of my TA.

A friend told me I can use much wider tires. He said he used to have 295 (but he is a kind of ******* and dont care if it rubs).

I was thinking of more like 275/50R16 (I dont want the tires to stick out), will I run into some problems with that?

One more thing, I dont have the spacers for the 16" wheels, do I need them?

Thanks, Nonni

On the OEM 16" wheels, 255 is about as far as you want to go. Anything wider will stick out beyond the rim and look silly. I have 245's on my 16's and I like the appearance. Then again, I'm not making crazy horsepower (stock 305) and don't really need anything wider.

If 275's don't stick out, which I don't see how they would not, they'll certainly not look right, and I'm not sure how your friend even fit 295's on the rim!

ive run a khumo(SP) 255 55 16 light truck tire.
they last forever, and really fill out the tire well nice.
hook pretty decent for a radial too.

Thanks, then I probably will stick with 255s (and 245 front)
