i guess this falls under chassis...

im guessing that camaros didnt come with any type of underbody coating or spray, whatever it is.... I live in indiana and dont have a camaro yet, im worried about rust all on the bottom of the car, ive seen it on my dad's 97 wrangler...its terrible. I dont know if i want a camaro if the bottom is gonna be all rusted out

mine's from NJ and it has underbody coating, it's a pain in the ***, you have troble findinf bolt heads, it's heavy, ect, some diden't have it, it depends where the car was sold.

 

i prefer no underbody coating... buy a car that was taken care of or if your looking for a deal accept the rust and fix it. when i bought mine it had only very minor surface rust in certain areas. put it up on stands and took care of it right away. years later when i had the time and money i redid the complete underside but it wasn't necessary. they only rust badly if they are not taken care of.

 

Mine has no rust and I'm still scraping the coating off. Of course it hasn't been driven in any rain for 5 years now and never will.

 

well im going to drive mine almost every day, and in the winter. I cant afford to have two cars like you people. Underbody coating is a blessing....how could u say that?

there is no way to repair rust if it is bad enough like it typically will be in an 88-92 car (what im looking for)

why would you scrape off the coating!? its there for a reason, and no one really looks under your car on a daily basis if ur worried about how ugly it looks....


so do they come stock with underbody coating or is it a dealer option, or was it done by some shop?

 

My underbody was factory galvanized.

 

well, i can only hope that when a TPI is finally for sale in my area that it is underbody coated.


my 1991 celica is underbody coated from the factory...but then again it only goes from 0-60 in 10 seconds

 

personally i would not want underbody coating.. that is unless it was a coating that was hard like por-15 done right or painted. i'd rather know what's under the coating. i've seen alot of bad things that undercoating hides. it's a great way that used car lots hide major problems as well as undercoating of the early years promoted rust and actually made things rust faster...

thankfully times have changed within the last year or two.

 

He probably got rid of it because it's a drag car. It's just extra weight. If you check out his website:

Ditto with the Por-15. I actually thought about stripping all my undercoating off at one time to put down a layer of Por-15.

 

Not all undercoating is good nor is the aftermarket rust proofing.

My car is proof of that. It's rusted all to hell.

 

You probably had rust under the coating and it worked its way to the surface. The metal was more than likely not prepped right before the under coating was applied.

 

well damn, i was hoping undercoating from the factory would be quality...i guess i cant expect quality from GM

i live in indiana and my dads jeep has no undercoat and it makes me sick getting under that thing. If i got a camaro like that, i would never be able to get rid of all that rust. There are very few camaros for sale in my area so i may not be able to get a choice...

btw, im only talking about factory undercoating...

 

Where in Indiana are you from?

If you haven't been, try searching Autotrader and increase the distance from you.

You're better off driving 3 hours to look at a car that's clean then you are buying a car close to home that needs rust repair.

i just dont have the time for 3hr drive

i have a feeling there will be more for sale during the summer, especially as gas prices rise

EDIT: just checked autotrader, there are only 3 within 50 miles of zip code (none that i want), and 1 more within 75 miles, and thats just too far
