whys my ride so bad

ive had this 92 RS for around 1month now and the ride started out very good untill i started really driveing the car, now when im going down a side street i feal every bump and it shakes everything inside my car and when im going down a really bumpy road my whole car shakes like crazy and vilerates and hurt me lol. i took it to belletire they checked out my front end and stuff and told me everything was tight and my shocks\struts wernt leaking, they said it was cause of the tires being so warn down (the rear tires have like no tred like lol) and my the front ones are kinda new. so i dont know what to belive. the springs look fine to me i checked em all out, the rear ones look like theve been replaced one time.

any and all ideas are welcome, thanks

Shox/struts not leaking, but have you tried the bounce test? Bounce a corner of the car and see how quickly it returns to rest - it should come back up then settle to normal height. Any more oscillations and/or if you can push the car down really easily then you may want to get new shox anyway.

From your description it seems as if the suspension suddenly stiffened up or something is binding and preventing smooth operation.

Mark.

also, maybe u should put your front tires on the back, since those are the wheels that need the tread..

Im kind of in the same boat as you are D. My car rides very rough and I also believe there is some noise coming from my rear left brake area. I plan on rebuilding, but its not cheap. I want to build it good, thinking of koni yellows or reds. Eibach pro-kit shortly after. I can not wait to feel the difference. Good luck.

i can push on my back and front and it goes down very very easy. and the right side of my car is about a 1/2 inch lower then the left. i was driveing it all day today with the A\C on and its shacking everything now, my top shakes, my new dash pad shakes and my mirrors. its pretty bad. and its not really bad when im going up and down hills and stuff, its just bumps like little ones, michigan bumpy roads. its like a thump hit, it feels like rideing a bike.

Just to clarify - it's the bumps in the road which are giving the car the shakes? You haven't got driveline issues too?

Anyway, more than likely the problem is a lack of damping control from the shox/ struts.

the car does have a 197,000 miles on it and it looks to me like the stock struts\shocks or replaced a very long time ago, my driveline is pretty good all except my trans mounts are shot and i will be replaceing thouse with the new ones i just bought very soon (its gotten pretty bad). im just confused i hate to change the shocks\strust (expeshily with how expencive struts are) and have little to no improvements.

Depends on what you get and where you get them. Bilsteins are usually priced in the $500-$600 range. Koni Yellows are the pricey-est at $650-$750 range, with the Reds coming in just a tad bit cheaper.

KYBs, Monroes and Gabriels sell for $250 or less but are obviously not as meant to be used as real performance shocks and struts.

These prices reflect an entire set of shocks and struts for the car, by the way. I hope no one misunderstood these to be "per shock/strut" prices.

Thought I'd add that my car also has the original shocks and struts on it after 167,000 miles. Both the struts and shocks are visibly worn, and the car rides horrible (even small cracks and bumps in the road seem much worse than they should be). The car's stance is also notably strange. The nose sits very close to the ground, while the rear seems to sit rather high.

I'm going to be changing them today if I can get around to it with a set of OEM replacement struts. I'll let you know how it feels once the new ones are in so you'll have at least an idea of the improvement you will feel. I personally have high hopes that it will help with some of the shaking and rattling the car seems to do even on well-paved roads. I guess we will see, though.

Anyways, take it easy man.

It could be a lot of things, but when my car road like crap, I brought it to my alignment guy and he said my shocks were shot. He replaced them first with Monroes. The difference was unbeleiveable. Roughness decreased 95%, yet the car will always be rough. It did not bounce up and down like it used to over bumps and dips.
I got tired of stock replacements, so I took them out and had bilsteins put in. Handling is a million times better, but the ride got stiffer. I can deal with it because I like coming around a turn at 65mph without body roll.

Really consider the tranny mount, my 92' was ridding rough and when i replaced the shocks/struts it had little effect. When i lifted my car to chnge the treanny filter and fluid i noticed my tranny mount was shot. To check it i had a co-worker get in the car and shift it through the gears. The mount was so bad that when it shifted gears it would twist the tranny mount almost out of the mount bracket causing the drive shaft to move considerably, which in turn made my rear end bounce. While i was at it i changed the motor mounts at the same time and after they were all changed the ride was as smooth as a camaro could be. U-joints on the drive shaft can only compensate for small angle differences and when they get to be to steep it will actually shake the rear causing what you would think to be a suspension problem.

Just out of curiosity, have you locked up your brakes and skidded? If you have, then you put flat spots on your tires. You can definitely feel it when driving. The only way to get rid of that is to get new tires.

Why does the trans mount take 2 people?

Unless you really badly faltspot a tire (like in badly enough to damage it) usually you can “get it back” with some aggressive driving/burnouts…

Well, here's the update. Yesterday I did not attempt to put the new parts on due to bad weather. I did try today, but I gave up after two hours of trying to remove the stupid shock mount nut from the top of the shock. It was on there so tight that it would rotate the whole shock instead of just the nut itself. I was using a wrench and a pair of pliers, but I could not figure out how to keep the strut mount stationary while twisting the nut off at the same time. I even sprayed some PB blaster on it without success.

I'm gonna take another stab at it when I get another day off, but I just said "fugg it" today because it's a blistering 95° F outside today in my area, and I was sweating my ***** off for two hours trying to do one "simple" task.

EDIT: Thought I'd add that the shock mount nut uses a 17mm (that's metric) wrench. I thought it would be useful for the average DIY'er because I couldn't find what size it was anywhere. Even my GM shop manual doesn't mention the size.
