1986 Iroc Z-28 cross-bred onto 1986 S-10 Blazer 4X4
I know this forum is crawling with other
Dr. Frankenstien breed.
"Igor, my ride is going to be unique"! My brain storm is a result of this mornings rain storm- I get into trouble anytime I sit idle for any period of time.
I thought I would run this by the best guys in the world to ask about a marriage of these chevy's.
(This is the only other place I can find brilliance equal to or greater then my own.)
I just bought this 1986 S-10 Blazer 4X4 (not driven for a few years) for $200.00 I went to DMV gave $120.00 for a couple years back-registration & the up-coming years registration.
TY for Non-Op slips!
A $5.00 air filter as I went to the smog testing station.
With crossed fingers, I prayed and paced while they inspected & tested the old girl...it passed! WOW! $48.00 to Smog'n'Go!
Back to DMV and the trophy-
Legal Tags at the finish line.
I was legal in the DMV parking lot. So....you know the truck would not start!
It (the truck) asked me for one last favor- a high class $84.00 battery from Wal-Mart.
So $457.00 to be on the road- (not walking) What a deal!
So I get to a girls house I know (a very good friend), and she says "Lester, you know anyone who wants this 1986 Iroc Z-28?" Yes Lester, just tow it off.
This is a car which was still a very clean Z-28 a few weeks ago. She had trouble getting it to run without overheating after replacing everything in the cooling system (she said)
This lady is single, but one of the very best female "wrenches" you could ever hope to meet. Sometimes she gets steared wrong by a "WISH HE KNEW" guy that was tryin to sell her more parts.
I had been out of contact as she was having the problem of overheating...
So shes at the wrecking yard, discussing the 86' Z-28 cooling problem with the staff. Then she spys a 1968 camaro, over in a corner. Screaming... she ran to embrace the 68' in her arms, love at first site, next thing you know the camaro is perched on the concrete driveway in front of her house.
She scored the "salvaged body" for $500.00. It was one week later when I went to her place and she had the engine & tranny from the 86' z-28 sitting in the engine compartment of the 1968- along with many other parts she thought might be adapted.
So before anyone could say a word, she had gutted the 86' down to the bone. The shell of the Z-28 is begging to be on the 4x4 chassis. Can you picture that profile?
Tadaaaaaa! A brainstorm is born. I want my 4x4 s-10 blazer chassis and drivetrain to marry the 86 z-28 body.
So I am here: fishing in the pool of Chevy Knowledge.
Will this be as easy a wedding as I hope. Am I getting into a project which will be costly? I am hoping to have the whole
Cha-Cha ready to mate in a pre-fab foresite kind of approach. I cant have no down time since it is my transpo. I would greatly appreciate any wisdom you guys got for me, and thanks in advance.

I've never done it but Im sure it wont just bolt on, and you can kiss the no down time goodbye. Im thinking you would have to fab some thing up to get everything to fit right. I've seen pics of what your talking about so it can and has been done.

The 86 blazer is a framed construction, the camaro is a uni-body construction.
In the past I did my best to combine fbody parts, and a 1993 s10 2x4 truck body.
Best I did was engine, trans, few rear axle parts, few front suspension parts.
You can kiss the front suspension parts good buy as your a 4x4.
Now, this could be done, but your down time would be a month I bet atleast. Your wheel base might be goofy looking. The s10 is also narrower then the camaro(about 1 foot), so your body would be wider then the suspension.
IMO, your best bet would be part the car out and make some cash. List it on the forsale board here. If you do this, I want first dibs on the front spoiler if its in good condition.

The no down time won't happen, it's not TV where you have seven guys working days on end to finish a project. You would need a game plan like are you planning on bolting the car body on the blazer frame OR are you planning on adapting the blazer suspension onto the unibody. I think adapting the suspension would look 100x better compared to having a big gap between the body and goofy looking frame sticking out. Another option and probably the easiest, would be to cut out portions of the unibody so that the car body would sit low enough on the frame to look GOOD, not like some of the hack jobs I've seen online. This is the approach I took on my el camino/fullsize blazer conversion. I cut some parts out of the body so that it would sit low enough on the blazer frame to look almost factory.
This is the approach I would take, strip the body off the blazer. Measure wheel bases on the car and blazer, figure out how much longer you need to make the blazer frame- you might get lucky and they are close enough? Either way your not going to be lengthening the car's body to match! You'll have to lengthen the frame in rear of the transfer case and make the rear driveshaft longer. Expect that driveshaft/balancing to be your single biggest expense of the project, all the misc. supplys will add up to a lot more though! Things like welding/torch supplys, steel, body mounts, bolts, etc. (hockey pucks work good). Lots of time involved, nothing too complex about any of it. A tape measure should be as complicated as it gets.
By getting the frame ready you'll still be able to drive the car and cut down on the actual convertion time. You'll need some kind of chain fall, a tractor, or a lot of wooden blocks and some kind of beams to hold the car body up while you fab mounts. STEERING- The steering column from astro vans and geo trackers have u joints if you are comfortable with your welding skill and get the correct shaft you can retain the safety bolt in case the weld fails and although it is illegal to run welded steering components, I don't think you'll have a problem if you keep the safety bolt and modify your existing car's shaft to accept the bolt. You'll know what i'm talking about once you get to that point and acquire the junkyard parts. BRAKES- use the car's master cylinder, adapt or run new lines to the prop. valve. that should be easy enough. COOLING- expect some time involved here, you'll probably end up using the car's radiator although the mounting will probably be in the way of the motor or something.. I'm sure hood clearance will give you fits as well.
I could go on, it is not as easy as you might think though. Is the blazer automatic or manual transmission? If you do go through with it, take lots of pictures along the way and post them up! If you have any questions or run into any problems along the way shoot me an email. Ringo321@hotmail.com
