mini starter problem!!!!!!!!

ok guys this happened to me last night and i couldn't figure out if my ministarter was defective or if it was my fault. i recently installed my hooker long tube headers in my 91 gta. i then ordered a csr mini starter. it fit great but when it came time to start the car the pinion wouldn't come far out enough to engage the flywheel..........needless to say i was pissed, do you guys think that this part was defective or something. i put in like 4 shims and it didn't do anything (i know the shimms don't have anything to do with the distance between the starter and the flywheel just had to mention the frustration of putting them in one by one at a time, because i though it wasn't lighning up right)f any ideas or recommendations for a ministarter that will fit with my hooker headers. i was looking at a new msd ministarter, wierd right, but it looked bad *** and msd is a kick *** company. need help guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
