Folks, anybody with tips on how to get the car off the ground, higher than jackstands or ramps? I have to get this 86TA project rolling. I need to patch floorboard, install SFCs and undercoat. I hope someone will have some advice on a safe way to get the car higher.....???

Remember that the suspension must be in a loaded condition and the car must be level to install SFC's. As for raising the car higher, I cannot say. I had the same problem and decided it was safer and better to bring my car to a welder who had a drive-on lift and let him do the SFC's. I searched the net for portable lifts that a car could be put on but only found the usual jack stands and drive-up ramps. Badman

 

Understood. I can get the car up on stands, but doesnt leave much headroom under there.

 

get some real jackstands.

there are two tools you'll notice are very different between the home mechanic and the shop mechanic (and home mechanics in the know).

jacks, and jackstands.


real jackstands are large, and will hold the car up high enough that you can slide the trans, with bellhousing, in and out. you can actually sit under the car, with your head in the trans tunnel.


real jacks are much larger the the mini things sold at walmart.


a good jack and jackstands are probly among the wisest of your tool investments... a good set will last your lifetime...

 

Thanks MrDude. That was simple wasnt it. Ive been doing some looking around online and have found a couple different sets depending on the amount of lift and $$ involved. NorthernTool has a pair for $190 that raise up to 47"!!! But that would cost $60 per set to ship. I'll do some measurements and see what I need. Thanks again. Seems obvious now that you say it.

 

check and see if you have a habour frieght tools near you. they have some large jack stangs. Its worth the money cause it alows you to do alot more work yourself.

going to say, buy some 2x8 wood at the local home depot or whatever. Put that under the tire. Jack up by the a-arm or wherever, then put the wood under the tire, 2x8 is wide enough for normal tires. This is cheap too.

They look pretty fugly. I wouldn't think a company would market something that ugly, leading him (us) to believe they're home made.

i bought 2 sets at sears for like $35 a peice, 6 ton I think, the starting height on them was almost the max height on my little stands

your going to need your baby jackstands or some wheel ramps just to get your car on some jacks with a starting height of 28", thats obviously over 2 ft high, and your car only starts with like 5" of clearance

i could use those for my truck I just got though

 

The ones I bought are used. I dont care if paint is chipped off/ugly. I just need 'em to hold up the car.

dr1, thanks for the link. Northern Tool has those for $190/set plus $62 shipping. The ones I got on Ebay go from 18" to 30". I shied away from the 47" stands mainly because of price especially since I found a deal on these 30 inchers.
