could this be my problem?

I have a hard 1st / 2nd shift on my 89 auto formula. Thought it was the transmission mount but that was fine. I noticed the torque bar mount was seperated between the torque bar. Picture isnt great but you can see what I mean. Could this be the cause of the harsh shift? Just want to be sure before I order one from summit.

thanks.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
I'm not completely sure what you're talking about... the pic doesn't look particularly unusual.

No the rubber being broken, or even completely missing, won't make the transmission shift any different. However, it may cause more noise and vibration to be transmitted to the vehicle.

You can just replace it and see if it makes a difference.

does it climb up into high RPM before suddenly hitting the next gear ?

is the TV cable set right and working correctly ?

do you mean the torque arm ?
it runs from the tranny back to the axle next to the driveshaft

good luck

Yes this is the rubber bushing for the torque arm (next to the transmission). The rubber is all there but seperated. I have a hard 1st / 2nd shift that is all. i really thought it was the transmission mount but that is perfect. I am having no problems with shifting, etc. It runs great. Just while I was under checking the trans mount I saw the torque arm rubber next to it and looked suspicious.

problem is that bushing is either a dealer part or I have to buy from summit. $30 shipped so if I dont really need it, I don't want to spend the $$$.

Again, the bushing is all there it is just seperated.

so the consensous would be this would cause a harsh 1st/2nd shift?

Get the energy suspension torque arm mount and get rid of the old worn out rubber one. The one in your picture just looks worn out.

Thanks for the replies. Talked with a GM parts guy yesterday and it may be correct. apparently that bracket/mount has (2) pieces that lock together around the torque arm. Each side has a rubber portion riveted to the bracket. I am now thinking that may be GM correct.

Thanks for all your replies. I will look elsewhere for that harsh shift.
