Sticky tires that are not too much $$$
Whats a good brand/model of tire that has good grip but is not tons of cash?
245/50/16
Although---if I could get the rears 255/50/16 that would be nice.

Good grip and inexpensive. I don't think there is such a thing. I've seen quite a few cars at the track running Blizzack snow tires. They're super soft but cost about the same as a slick. Actually, slicks don't cost a whole lot more than a good performance tire. They're just not designed to last 50,000 miles.

I buy my slicks at the track.
There are always people who have a butt load of used slicks laying around with a few passes left on them.
I do not go to the track often, so a used set that I can get 5-6 passes out of works fine for me.
BTW I paid $10 for my set of Mickey Thompsons 295/60/15's

Drag radials are usually cheaper than standard street rubber, but they don't last as long. I know that 315/35's cost a butt load for street treads, half a butt load for nitto dr's and only a 1/4 for bfg's. The decreasing cost comes with decreasing tread life but more traction!

Nitto 555 - $151 ->30K miles
Nitto 555R - $157 ->15K miles
Nitto 555RII - $185 ->15K miles
Nitto NT-01 - $197 -> 10K miles
I had the nitto 450's on my old 4th gen Camaro and they were great,

I also had the BFG G-Force T/A KDW on my old 4th gen Trans Am and they were really really good, but cost 50% more than the 450.

Great post Zepher. That break down of tire price and life helped out a lot. I think I am going to go with 315- 555R. and 275- 555Rs. I think that will make the car a heck of a lot more fun. What do you think?

what are the 275's for? the fronts? I wouldn't put DR's up front. If you want good fronts, go with the 555RII for the front.

I believe you, but why is that? I have done searches, but all the places that sell them don't really coment on the differences. Please fill me in, as your sig pic, makes me know you know more about this kinda stuff than I do, haha.

Re: Sticky tires that are not too much $$$
The DR's have a much softer sidewall which can cause the tire to roll a lot easier and cause the tire to skip if you corner hard.
I've never done it, but was told not to run DR's on all 4 corners by other racers.
that is why I went with the 555RII's on all 4 corners.

Re: Sticky tires that are not too much $$$
So the IIs are sort of like the RIIs except that they have a stronger sidewall? Cuz if that is the case, I may do what you are doing. I like going fast and being able to "hook", but I would also like to have my tires stay put when turning hard. I guess I will check if the vendors sell the IIRs in 315 and 275. I may go down to 265 or 255 if possible, these 275s I have now, tend to scrape a little when I get close to lock out.

Re: Sticky tires that are not too much $$$
I went to the Nitto website and that answered all my questions. Looks like the RIIs are the same as the Rs except with a harder sidewall. I am still sad though...
They don't make the RIIs in 315s

So that sux. Oh well. i guess I will get the RIIs for the front and the normal Rs for the back. Maybe it will all work out and be best of both worlds.
They do make the NT-01s in the size that I want (315, and 275), but that would just be a waste of $ on a street car that is going to see 95% of its time on the street screwin' around, and the other 5% at some sort of track, right???
10K miles is really not that much, but then again this car is a "only in nice weather" kinda car, so maybe it is not a bad idea totally. Then again, I would be really really pissed if I got a flat.. haha. Maybe I should stay on the cheaper side of things...

Re: Sticky tires that are not too much $$$
My buddy runs 275 RII's up front and 315 DR's out back on his Vette and it works great for him.
For straight line launching, use the DR's out back and not the RII's.
Oh, and the RII's are not as wide as most tires in the same size. My Nitto 555's are a tad wider then my RII's, both are 275/40/17

Really!!?? Great. Thanks for the helpful info. I am sure the extra clearance is all I need. It almost never hits, Now I bet it will never hit.
Good to hear your buddies vette is working well for him. I guess that is the path I will take. Great info and fast too. haha.

wow---what crappy answers. I am not talking about DRs and don't have 17's. Maybe a set of slicks someday but not now.
Is Falken or Toyo Proxes 4 any good?

Who cares that you don't have 17s. MANY MANY tires come in both 16 and 17 inch versions!! AMAZING!
Anyways, I don't mean to come across as being flaming you, but there are NO crappy answers here. This is all good info.
If you don't want the DRs (555R), then the normal street version of them is very good too. (just 555). Geezz

You ask a vague question with absolutely no indicaiton of the intended usage of your car or what size wheels you have and then are disapointed when it's not the answer you wanted to hear??? What planet are you from....ohh wait I see your Canadian, let me guess French Canadian??
Thanks for waisting 5 minutes of my life that I'll never get back.

Sorry to everyone else, but when I saw 12 replies I figure I might get lots of good suggestions. Half the posts are from people talking to each other.
I find it hard to get any answers off this board lately. I posted a topic about where to place Formula decals, asking for good pictures, tons of views but nothing really good. I kinda want great info before the decals are on the car.
Must be the heat thats getting me a bit wound up.
So now DR or auto cross tires. Just normal street type tires. If your a happy owner of X brand or an unhappy owner, let me know.
thanks
