mustang coilover front struts/rear shocks installed. pics.

yes.... they will fit a camaro with a lil machining.
chopped the spindles to fit the smaller width pattern of the strange strut.
the spohn strut plates needed the bushing knocked out and a 5/8x3/4 one pressed in.
the threads needed to be hit with a die on the fronts because they were not threaded enough to fit the camaro type strut mount.
the foxbody strange rears are only 60 bucks. great alternative to a leaking 160 dollar qa1. and they almost bolt in like a stocker.
the shock tube is too large to fit a stock mount, so youll need to use a madman type setup and they should be a direct bolt on. i run some panhard rod clevis that are welded on. few bucks cheaper than the madman, and serve the same purpose.
the lower mount had a bit of steel i had to hit off with a grinder. it stuck out longer than the rubber bushing. it may have been just my set, or they all could be like this.
havent quite got it rolling to see how it all works out.
still have to fab up a few things to get the pinto rack put into place.

yes. rear shocks are a direct bolt in, minus the lower mount. i already had these brackets on to keep the shocks out of a bind. its a good thing, i dont think the **** would clear the sway bar(check the pic)
i used panhard rod clevis and welded it to the rearend.
you can buy them through madman or they are available via QA1 at a much higher price.
some call them shock relocation mounts, others call them "shackle" mounts

ive got the backs set on 3, and i have the fronts currently set on 1 for the track.
it drives down the street like a caddy, minus some vibrations from solid mounted parts.
im happy with them over my stock stuff and drag shocks, though i lost some front end travel with the coilovers.
good and bad. depends on where you want to hook up. not as friendly on the street, but goes down the road instead of up in the air now.....

Nice find! Excellent work... when I get around to dialing my suspension in, this just may be the way I go. Thanks for the info!

Re: mustang coilover front struts/rear shocks installed. pics.

60 bucks vs 160.... its a no brainer. the shock mount is needed anyway.
i did lower control arm brackets, and the shock mounts and picked up .03 #'s on my 60ft. that was with the old comp shocks. but a back to back test.
could have been either mod, or a combo.
one of them works.
haha.
good luck!

strange. they only have one part# for 87-93 stang.
the qa1 WILL NOT work. it has an extra portion that hangs down from the bottom of the shock and will get into the tie rod arm. it looked to be only minimal, but i didnt want to shed any weight in that area on the spindle.
it adjusts by a **** on the bottom of the strut.
you turn the wheel to lock and its very easy to adjust on car.

Re: mustang coilover front struts/rear shocks installed. pics.

do you think a coil over sleeve for a camaro strut would fit the mustang strut? or is there a difference in the cartridge diameter? I see the struts at stranges site go for 119 and the coil over sleeve/hardware for 70. My coil sleeves have threads to the bottom, I`d use`em if I could. How is the compression on the strange struts? the adjustment **** is only for extension...too bad they don`t have a double adjustable.

yes, it will fit, but comes up a lil short on adjustment. most camaro coilover kits come with a 5" sleeve whereas a mustang kit is mostly 7" sleeves.
this is due to the placement of the "ledge or shelf" on the camaro strut. the mustang strut does not have this protrusion. a mustang sleeve would work fine on a camaro strut.
another issue you run into is the notch that is cut into the mustang sleeves.
i purchased a strange coilover kit with the struts, so its all mustang stuff. mates together really well.
lmk if you have any questions. i wont leave you hanging.

another option is chris alstons varistrut. i have heard it is back in production, which is what i would have liked to use in the 1st place. there body is threaded like a qa1 so you wont have to run an extra sleeve.

mmmm. i was told by searay at chris alstons they would not be releasing the camaro strut, but looks like its on their website now.
bout a year too late for me.
might save you some trouble in fabbing.
http://www.cachassisworks.com/vas_library.html
it was taken off their website for sometime. that has to be updated.
lil pricey though! 750 for single adj coilover 900 for double adjustable coilover.
430 for the strut itself.

Re: mustang coilover front struts/rear shocks installed. pics.

Thanks! I`m sitiing on the bottom of my sleeve now, so If I went to a stang strut with my current sleeve and cut the slot out, I`d be further up on the sleeve right? Those vari struts are the cats meow but for 1500 complete they better drive the car too, DAMN !! I`ve beem kicking these around, I don`t know if you have heard of them but they are in the same ballpark http://www.santhuffshocks.com/struts.html

Thanks, the singles from strange are looking good

all the way on the bottom?
your spring may not be compressed enough(meaning too high a spring rate)
how much travel do you have in the front end?

if my car wasnt so much on the street, i would have a set of santhuffs.
you CANNOT beat their precise adjustments. many racers will tell you that one click on a santhuff is like 6 on a qa1. they are very accurate.
the varishocks are very pricey, but being 32 way adjustable, they might be worth it, though at my level i doubt i need any of that.
good ole 114.00 strange does the trick.

Re: mustang coilover front struts/rear shocks installed. pics.

To get the car low is the reason, I have at least 2.5 inches of compression, my strut can go right up into the mount like a spohn, the spring is set on the tower, I`m using 200# pound 10 inch springs..aluminum headed BBC. I`ve heard the same about those santhuffs struts too.

Re: mustang coilover front struts/rear shocks installed. pics.

stage20 - You and I talked about this before. Good to see you got it all sorted out. I still highly reccomend putting travel limiters on with those strange front struts. You don't have to cut down your travel range, just let the cables catch just before the struts. I know of 3 stang guys on their 2nd+ sets of those struts due to the internal piston breaking loose from the rod. Haven't had any come apart, but they start making a clunk/bang noise and loose their adjustablility(stays full loose, no matter where the **** is).

Nice job on the steering rod alteration for the rack. That came out very clean and looks like it has a nice bit of surface area to get a good weld.

After seeing the new pricing, I'm glad I got in on the initial run of those vari-struts. Jebus! I was still looking to get another set, now I think I'll go your route.

i imagine your car is a bit heavier than mine in the front... well, i dunno. i have a 6.0 iron block. its 215 pounds. added 75 pounds to the car over a sbc.
i run a 14" 150 pound spring. its set 1/2 from coilbind. ive got a pretty good amount of street miles on it and rides better than stock springs. i only have about 6-6.5" of travel vs my 8" with a drag coil spring.
my car could still be lowered more if i wanted to put it in the weeds.
it sits 27 1/4 inch from the ground to the fender lip. i am running a 28" sportsman front tire if that info is useful to you.

thanks for what help you offered me. got me in the right direction anyway.
i finally just went out and got all the stuff and started hacking. no looking back!!!!
the car actually turns in a tighter radius than a stock steering box.
not quite as good as an s10 manual box, being it has no steering stop in it.
with skinny tires, i could just about turn the tire 90 degrees with the car.

those alstons are nice pieces, but im glad i went this route.
as mentioned above, if i wanted to do a set of santhuffs, i could pick up a set of those, or any other mustang strut slightly used or even new from a swap meet. they are more common than the 3rd gen stuff.
thanks for the comments!

I dunno, I have not wieghed it lately, I would imagine it`s close to stock or less, a/c heat deleted inside and out, front bumper and plastics out, manual steer box, manual master, electric water pump, paper thin glass hood, 9 inch converter,th350, tube k member and arms, coil over conversion..I`d be willing to bet it`s lighter than stock. I`m also running 28`s moroso ds`2 and my fender lip is 27 inches off the ground.

Stage20 - how much shorter than stock did you go on the steering arms? I've got a set to do soon.

You guys talking spring numbers helped my mood for the day. I'm trying to finish up our 10.5 outlaw car for a runday sunday after thanksgiving and I haven't been able to fully set-up the car on the springs. I have a set of 14" 175# and I was thinking I might have to next-day in some 200's or 225's after this weekend(final assembly) to be ready to race. - Sounds as though the 175's will work though.

my front end is 1740, and a 150# is perfect for me.

i measured a buddys mustang spindle from centerline of ball joint to centerline of tie rod and did my best to make them match up. i got within an 1/8". not bad for homebuilt stuff.
make sure you order a std length rack and not one for a camaro, or the drivers side will be too short???? im guessing here, but makes sense.
i wanna say the deminsion was 5.5 or 6.5" but i am not for certain.

I'm going to use a t-bird rack. SAE tie-rod threads and regular inverted flare fittings on the hook-ups(vert will be power, radial car will just be manual).

thanks for the input.

I'm more interested in the rear setup. So you bolt a "y" looking thing inplace of the shock stud that we have. And it fits?

pretty much. you can buy the shock relocation brackets from madman, or use a panhard rod clevis bracket from a 4 link kit.
my steel tube inside the rubber bushing on the lower mount sttuck out way past the rubber. i took the belt sander too it. could be all the sets, or just mine.

it adjusts by a **** on the bottom of the strut.
you turn the wheel to lock and its very easy to adjust on car.

Sorry to bring this from the dead but hey. It's good stuff.

When you say this you mean qa1 struts won't work or shocks? Or neither. What about a rear Shang coilover i assume it's pretty much the same install. Looking to go coilover all around. Do I need C/C plates or are they just recommended. Looking at the founders plates.

i would highly suggest aftermarket plates.

qa1 single adjustable struts wont work due to their body design. the lower half of the strut wont clear the stock spindle. youd have to shave half of it out to fit the lower portion of the single adjustables.

qa1 now has a double adjustable for the mustang, and its designed different. it looks like it may do the job if you found a set at a deal. qa1 makes a bolt on now for a 3rd gen. i wouldnt buy anything qa1, one of the reasons i did this in the 1st place.

you can get a rear coilover kit from several vendors now. spohn, and accufab has a kit out, there may be others.

Re: mustang coilover front struts/rear shocks installed. pics.

Do all 87-93 mustangs have struts up front. There's a set of front and rear strange adjustables on eBay right now I'm looking at but the fronts look like shocks. And he says they make noise but they're new iirc. Is the noise common of strange products?

noise? maybe from the spring on the seat, but hopefully not the strut. if the strut makes noise, i dont think i would want it on my car. piston is binding or a seal is worn/missing.

shoot me a link.

strange strut should look like this.

i read the link and would not buy them if he says they are noisey and clunky. something cant be right with them. those are what you need though.

Re: mustang coilover front struts/rear shocks installed. pics.

i slid a qa1 single adjustable up to the stock spindle and it looked like there would have to be some removal of metal that i wasnt comfortable with. the new double adjustable is made different, but those are so high you can just buy the varishocks that bolt in all together (if they are making them again) they are very pricey. here is a pic of the qa1, you can see the lower portion compared to the strange.

did you use a bushing to make up the difference below the threads to step? if not the strut threads would hit the hood. I am in the process right now and have my spindles machined ready to install but didnt get the coil over kit for a mustang.. I should have.

i had to think about it. mine have been threaded farter down and the tops chopped off. actually grinded a flat on each side so i can hold it with a wrench to get the nut off. 16mm sound right for the stud? it was an odd size. my machine guy didnt have the right pitch. its a coarse thead. i want to say 1.75. had a buddy do it and he used a spacer, which i believe was 5/8 ID. the machine shop used a special vise to hold the strut in place so it wouldnt scar it. he told me the name of it but i i forget.

just finished the swap. Are most of you using the spacer that is used on the original coil over set up( or similar one) or are you centering the spring cap in the pocket and using a longer spring. I wanted more caster so I had to use a 2 3/8 spacer between the strut mount and the coil spring cap.

I threaded the rest of the shaft and cut off the extra also. I tried to get creative but wanted it to be an easy process when replacing the struts. That process seemed the easiest. The thread is m16x2.0. My original sleeves didnt fit so I bought the Strange Eng sleeves with the cut outs.

Re: mustang coilover front struts/rear shocks installed. pics.

which strut mount are you using? i have no experience with a stock mount. all the coilover kits for our cars are designed for 12 inch springs i tried a 14" 175 spring and i couldnt get it to collapse enough to store energy, so i went down to a 14" 150 and it has been working great. still not the travel of a coil spring setup, but im making enough power to not need as much travel now anyway.

Re: mustang coilover front struts/rear shocks installed. pics.

I have Founders performance mounts. I am running a 10 inch 250lb spring. Really no room for a 12 inch with the caster I am running as I had to space down the spring cap.
