Can the pinion yoke smack into the top of the tunnel?

Err, I guess what I meant was, how hard is it to make the pinion yoke smack the top of the tunnel? ie, what the heck did the previous owners do to her??

My red car has this damage (pretty good little dent coming into the car) on the body of the car right in between the two rear seats. It's right above the rear yoke and when you look from the bottom it looks like the car bottomed out so bad the yoke hit the body quite hard, appears to have happened at speed as well. It made cracks and there is a hole big enough to fit 4 fingers through, like I said it appears to have hit hard.

Anybody ever see this before?

Sorry I don't have pics right now.

Probably tried to drive it without the torque arm.

Thats VERY common with lowered cars. It just clearances itself. I hammered mine out carefullywith a real lightweight body mallet and then glassed in the void from the topside under the rear seats. painted it with epoxy paint and you can no longer tell from the bottom side a few years later with natural weathering that it was even damaged and altered.

A broken tranny mount can also cause this.

Acccidental miss on your part. He listed pinion yoke, not the tranny yoke. But yes, a broken trans mount would make the tranny yoke come upward.

Re: Can the pinion yoke smack into the top of the tunnel?

I'm still wondering how that could have happened if the torque arm was on there. I think you might be right as far as trying to drive it or pull it maybe without the torque arm installed.
Maybe they wanted to see what it was like to drive without springs in the rear and without the torque arm at the same time. The shape of it looks like the pinion was still pretty much parallel to the body. Is there any way to get the car that low on the rear?

Broken rear ujoint caused the drive shaft to hit. The impact looks round like the drive shaft was rotating. Do you see any marks on the drive shaft? It may have been replaced.
