Fixing up a 91 Z28 Suspension RE-DO

Background, were putting alot of suspension stuff into this tired ol' beast. What do you really think will be most noticeable with these parts added to the veh.

Oh btw 150k on the body, 50k on the engine. No Rust....yada yada

Here is the list of parts:

Steering brace
Subframe Connectors
Rear LCA's W/relocation brackets (see bottom info)
Spohn Cromoly Front and Rear Sway bars and Bushings
Panhard bar
Strut tower brace (2-point)
New mix of poly and rubber bushings

Keep in mind that this is a car that is pretty much still stock in regards to suspension items, minus a set of eibach lowering springs and brand new struts and shocks.

I just wonder if its really going to be a handling machine after this, please let me know your experiences....

Re: Fixing up a 91 Z28 Suspension RE-DO

Spohn or J&M Strut mounts

used GM sway bars (you can get two or three sets for what the Spohn'll cost you, and they do the exact same thing-

sway bars are an excelent tuning tool)

don't get poly/poly LCAs- J&Ms poly-ball, rod/rod, rod rubber, or rod poly are good for handling

weld in SFCs

Biggest question of them all- what tires and shocks/struts are you using?

Oh, and for some reading material....try this It's somewhat incomplete and needs to be updated (new version forthcoming), but it'll get your mind going in the right direction.

Re: Fixing up a 91 Z28 Suspension RE-DO

I think shocks/struts and springs are the most noticeable improvement. I have yet to throw my new front suspension on yet but i just finished up the rear, Tokico illumina's with pro kit springs and i can tell a huge difference from the old stock stuff. Next to shocks and struts i think the next most noticeable thing would be weld in SFC's then some bigger sway bars and poly bushings.

Re: Fixing up a 91 Z28 Suspension RE-DO

Yup.
Good shocks and tires should be first on the list, after replacing all the worn out stuff on the car (that you aren't planning to replace with, say, aftermarket LCAs, PHBs, etc).
Then allignment.
Then SFC, wonder bar.
Then springs, sway bars, new control linkages, etc.
Oh, and don't think about trying to make a handling machine without upgrading at least brake pads.

Thank you all for your feedback! Obvously, I am on a 1500.00 budget (labor costs me nothing but beer and time). So nI am struggling to choose wisely.

Re: Fixing up a 91 Z28 Suspension RE-DO

I reccomend replacing the factory strut mounts with the aftermarket pieces such as J&M or Spohn as they have extra travel and allignment adjustment built in and are more durable.

The reason I say GM bars is because you find them cheap and they are just as good as the aftermarket pieces. Plus, having a few different sizes allows you to tune the car's characteristics easily.

The reasoning behind the bushing choice in the LCAs is discussed in this thread.

In all honesty, the $1500 budget (if I were spending it) would go to tires and shocks alone. My KONIs were ~$750, and my sport tires were ~$600. This is where the best gains are to be made on a stock car and where the most money should be spent.

Re: Fixing up a 91 Z28 Suspension RE-DO

I completely agree with the above statement. I had about a 1500$ budget for my suspension and did the following.

Tokico Illumina Shocks and struts 500$
Eibach Pro kit 200$
Poly Bushings 50$
And on the way would be the LCA's, panhard and LCARBS. THats about 300$ right there. I still have some money left over but im keeping that incase anything happens lol. I do all my own work also so not having to pay labor is pretty good to the wallet.

I just bought new tires for my car less then a year ago but if you dont have a good set then invest in them before the extra goodies.
