fyi - steering box quick ratio box vrs standard

Just wanted to share some information. I intended to place in a base firebird a quick ratio steering box (Gear) in a 92 vert firebird with a standard ratio box from the factory. I investigated and everything seamed the same. specs, etc.. everything I saw indicated that they were exactly the same except the ratio.

What I learned when I installed is that the quick ratio steering box has a larger connector that connects to the intermediate shaft (rag joint) than the standard box does. Therefore the quick ratio box is not a simple drop in upgrade. you would have to replace the rag joint and the connector also. Something I was unwilling to do; so I simply placed a new standard ratio in place of the old box.

Hmm....I gotta say, Ive never seen a different input spline shaft between the boxes. Even the S10 boxes are all the same input shaft end. I had a quick ratio WS6 box in my 87, replaced it with a reman standard box, and then back to a new quick ratio.. All this with the stock intermediate shaft, and this was between two different year thirdgens. One was an 87 WS6 and the other an 86 TA (non WS6).

Unless Im misunderstanding what you are explaining.... Where'd the new box that you tried that didtn work come from? Reman? Donor car??

It was an a1cardone from rockauto.com I went to autozone and purchased a standard one and it worked fine. The spline was about 10-15% larger on the quick ratio one and the intermediate shaft connector was nut adjustable in any way.

Sounds like they sent you the wrong part. Or they got a core that was the wrong part and it somehow made it back out marked for f-bodies. Then again...I dont know everything. So there could be a different box out there. I just know that my stock quick ratio box was exactly the same as the standard boxes that I got...as well as the reman quick ratio I picked up from Autozone.

i wish there was a way to have a quick ratio manual steering.
i love only having to turn the wheel once to do a u-turn.
