can't get tie rod adjusters off
I bought a set of Spohn Tie Rod Adjusters, and i want to put them on, but i can't get the stock ones off...
How do you remove the stock tie rod adjusters? I understand the loosening of the clamps, but then is it just supposed to unscrew? Do tierod adjusters have reverse thread on one side or do you have to remove the tie rod end from the spindle?
Thanks. Really need to align my car so i can... well get it to sts so it can actually be aligned.

Re: can't get tie rod adjusters off
Being in NJ the adjusting sleeves are probably rusted onto the tie rods. They are left/right hand threaded so can just turn them on/off. Can soak the threads by squirting oil, PB blaster, or Kroil into the opening of the adjuster (the slot).
Then let them soak for a few days. If the slot is facing upward can really fill it up with oil.
There is a tie-rod adjusting tool that also helps a lot. Although not worth buying if switching out the adjusters for the solid type.
Can also use a large screwdriver and place it into the slot. The pry in such a way to open the adjuster. Remove the clamps entirely before doing this.
Also, be careful, if the screwdriver slips you don't want to catch any body parts with it.
Note that once you get them off the threaded ends of the tie rods may need a good wire brushing. Sometimes the rust build up will prevent the solid adjuster from threading on.

i tried to remove my stock ones a while back and couldnt do it, they were rotted to the tierods. If your tie rods are original, this is a good time to just get some new ones and forget about messing with the old junk

Re: can't get tie rod adjusters off
You probably right I may just get new tie rods, but im broke cause i just bought tires.
And i was going to have an alignment shop just replace them, but i don't want to drive it there like it is. I lowered it, change the Strut Towers and am changing rim size and stuts, so i was hoping i could just sorta correct the crazy alignment so it wont destroy my tires.
My front end isn't too rusted so im gonna try to PB blaster them. If that doesn't work then i may borrow my friends crappy rim tire setup and drive to sts on those and have them replace them.
Thanks. I'll let you know how it works out.

Search around online and im sure you can find many other places that have them too.
I think Spohn sells a kit for the entire front end

Actually im getting the one side off but its a really slow going process and its quite hard to turn. I guess i'm getting it but i wish there was a faster way rather than a visegrip.

take a couple minutes and take the tierod off the spindle on one side of the car and see of the balljoints are even anygood. Your most likely wasting your time even trying to get this to come appart.

they may have a locking bolt that is not allowing you to unscrew the tie rod off... if im wrong i apologize, but ive ran into this a few times on several different cars

Re: can't get tie rod adjusters off
Any time I have an issue with rusted stuff I just heat the part til its cherry red and spray some deep creep or whatever......works every time. If those steering parts are origional I would definitely replace them though....I just rebuilt my steering box and replaced all the steering linkages and she steers like a brand new car. You might want to get some aluminum adjusters between the rod ends....the factory adjusters are crap anyway.
