What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

I did a search.

Just doing a poll to see what people are using and why they are.

Thanks in advance. Tater

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

34mm front, 24mm rear.

The largest that I know of are 36 front and 24 rear - the 36 is hollow though. I had a Z28 parts car with the 34 front, and couldn't justify trying to get a hollow 36 when I had a solid 34 for free.

Why? 'Cause everyone else swaps to the large ones - is there another reason?

I'm sure there's a good technical reason, or at least a good technical line of BS to justify it - TGO is chocked full of technical BS to justify the gazillions of $$ we spend on our cars.

Out of every 100 folks on TGO, 7 have a really good technical reason that applies to THEIR cars for spending the extra cash and effort, another for 25 will "justify" the extra cash and effort for THEIR cars even though they really probably don't need it, and the other 68 will follow suit "just because" they got caught up in the "well they did it, I need to also" - and if they don't follow suit, it's due to lack of funds and NOT lack of desire to follow the pack. But hey - need it or not, we love our cars and we always want the best that we can give them. Sometimes I wonder if the wife and kids get half the attention - I know at my house it's iffy at best

Think of it as the TGO Economic Stimulus Program - without TGO, all the ebay sellers making money on us nuts would have to go get REAL jobs somewhere!

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

very well said,,,i read some posts and people are fanatics...everything from tires to air cleaners and whatever...for most people fram oil filters or raybestos brakes are just fine and etc,,but some people need to over-spend and that's fine,,,but i wonder if most of the people spending so much cash can actually tell the difference with a lesser costing item installed on our cars....i have 34mm front and 24 mm rear and it's fine....just my 2 cents..

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

36mm front, 19mm rear. Front works fine, the rear was a little loose with the larger bars, seems happiest with the 19mm, i tried the 24mm and 22/21mm

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

Size - pretty sure it is a 32mm
Reason - It came on the 85 Iroc donor car I am using and was bigger than the stock one in my RS.

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

I'm running a camaro solid 34mm in front and my factory 24mm in rear. My car was a WS6 and came with the 36mm hollow front, but I put the camaro one on only because it's solid, and I had polyurethane bushings for it while I had to special order the 36mm ones, lol. I plan to get hotchkis ones at some point...not at the top of my list though!

My 85 IROC was originally equipped with a solid 34/24 combo. I swapped out the 34 for the hollow 36. Why? The afternoon was slow and I was out of India Pale Ale .

IROC_U, your combo is probably stock.

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

36/24 combo because that is what my GTA came with.

But I want to replace my 24 with a 19, for the same reason //<86>TA\\ did. It loosens up on weight transfer restriction & allows the tires to grip & actually handle better.

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

36mm front & 24mm rear. Bought them brand new at the dealer. I wanted to beef up the suspension and also got the stiffest coil springs at the time. Also runnining Bilstein shocks at rear and soon to be front struts.

This combination has yeilded great results for traction and roadability even with the Ronal R15's. I guess we all tune our cars to our driving personalities.

Oh yea, have a wonder bar up front too.

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

You will need a smaller rear bar if the car has subframe connectors than the car without. The stiffer the chassis, the less rear bar needed to a certain extent because frame twist will keep the inside rear planted better. Chassis flex is bad though, it makes for unpredictable handling and tire footprint.

Also, weight bias front to rear will also have an affect on bar size choice. For exa, ple, I had a lot lighter nosed V6 and ran a 34mm solid front bar and a massive 25mm solid rear bar. The lighter nose would not roll the front laterally as much so as not to lift the inside rear.

Whatever came stock on my 82 Z28, never measured them. I need to get the front one back on again, 3 months of street driving ahead of me before the track opens again.

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

I've got a 36mm in the front and 24 rear on my '85. The other has a solid set taken off of another V6. I think it's 32mm. I picked up a set of BMR sway bars that I'll be replacing the 36mm.

Bigger is not always better. Too big & the cars weight will not be able to transfer & the sway bar will "lift" the inside tire up, reducing available traction.

One day I'm going to make a forum dedicated just to laughing at TGO its going to be great, you're getting the first invite, with ban button privileges.

Oh and just so as my post isn't pure harassment, I want a hellwig adjustable rear bar, or something.

I have 36 front spohn 25 rear. I'm replacing the rear though, way too stiff. Lifts the inside. The hollow core bar's supposed to be as light as a 34 and stiffer.

36/21 - better
36/19 - better yet

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

Rear bars are already adjustable. All you have to do is move the axle mounts closer together to soften the bar, and spread them wider apart to stiffen.

You can get about a 2mm difference just from mount position.

I've thought about that but I wasn't sure if you would need the little metal rib that's welded onto the axle tube to keep the mount from twisting. Do you think torquing it down like normal but away from that rib be enough to keep it in position?

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

What is the smallest rear bar the 3rd gens came with?

The reason I am asking is, on my '87 V6 Bird, the 19mm open end wrench I used to check the rear bar fit loosely.....like it would be more like a 17mm.

Just curious.

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

I was once going to buy a rear bar from a guy claiming to have an 18mm bar off a 3rd gen Camaro. I went over to his place to measure it myself and it was like 18.1xx mm on my caliper. All the bends looked just like your average bar and the thing looked like the mounting spots would all line up. I wish I would have bought it but I was too skeptic. Now that I think about it, the $20 he wanted wouldn't have been a big deal if it wouldn't fit. Oh well.

Use a 17mm and 18mm wrench on your bar to figure it out. No reason to stop at 19mm. Maybe some cars really did come with 18's.

Front - whatever 1 5/16 converts to - it's the Spohn one. Rears - haven't decided yet, but from reading this it sounds like it will be 24. Why? The springs, panhard bar, and rear shocks are done, along with some fat tires on all 4 corners. I love to take turns fast and watch the expressions on my friends faces as they **** themselves thinking the car won't hold, followed by the large grin when i accel through w/no body roll :-D

i picked up a 4th gen rear axle from a 2000 and it had a tiny rear bar, don't think i ever measured it and I'm pretty sure it got chucked but man that thing was thin.

Which means thirdgens also have a 14mm rear bar since they interchange.

Have any proof of the 14mm? I'm doubting that...

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

When I swapped out my V6 for a 350, I figured I'd upgrade the suspension as well. I didn't think the tiny 30/19 combo could control the extra weight in the front end properly. I tried a 34/24 combo as that is what I could find cheap and it was too tailhappy for me. I put the 19 back in and its pretty good. I did find a 36 last summer that I am going to put in this winter and try it with the 24 in the spring and see how it feels. I'm going to keep the 34 and 19 bars though, just in case. My main goal is to have it corner as best I can on a budget, without major/expensive upgrades or lowering the car excessively. PA potholes are just too deep to lower the car too much.

There is enough info here already by far to give you a standard common guideline.

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

I don't believe my post is a silly question.

As I stated in the original post, I am just doing a poll to see what other people are using.

With that said, anybody that wants to post their "positive" inputs to this thread it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for the useful info! Keep it coming!

Re: What size sway bars are you running and WHY?

It depends on the suspension package the car came with. Not all IROC's are 1LE and got the big 36/24 setup. I don't remember what code my car has off hand, but if I remember right, my car came with 34/21.

Either way, a digital caliper is a good tool to have around. Some of the $20-$30 ones are pretty decent and durable. They may not measure to the hundred thousandth like the $100+ ones but they are more then adequate for most peoples needs. If you're tight with money you could always slip an adjustable wrench over the swaybar and tighten it down until it's snug then pull it off and measure. Or if you like a little more math, you could always wrap a piece of string around the bar and find the diameter based off the circumference. Just make sure you take all your measurements away from the bends because they are not round at the bends. I always measure mine in the very center of the bar.

You can get about a 2mm difference just from mount position.
How close do you have to move the mounts to get the 2mm diff?
I currently have a 1" and would like to losen her up a bit.

you can only really move them so much before you hit the center section. Move the mounts as far in as you can and see what happens, if its too much of a difference, move them out slight and try again

do you have suspension upgrades and sfc's? i would get a smaller bar, 19mm is working well for me
