caliper overhaul ?
caliper overhaul ?
Alright its not a third gen, but it is a Chevy. I need to rebuild the front calipers on my wive's 95 s10 blazer. Where could I find a technical article on how do do it, and is it very hard? I have replaced pads and rotors before but never rebuilt calipers. I was going to be lazy and have Just Brakes redo the whole system, but they wanted to charge me $750.00. That was the wakeup call I needed to get off my *** and do it myself. With some careful shopping on the web, I got all of the parts I needed for a complete brake overhaul minus rotors for $200.00. That even includes a new set of monroe shocks. On top of that it will all be delivered to my door for free. Anyways back to the question: What is involved in rebuilding calipers and do the kits include instructions or is there a tech article somewhere?
buying remanufactued calipers is easier and just about as cheap!
Ask your local discount auto parts dealer how much for a "loaded caliper".
"Loaded Caliper" is the term for a remanufactured caliper that also has new pads installed. All you do is hang the new caliper and pads, bleed the brakes and off you go.

I just replaced my calipers on my Bird for about $22-$24 for both the front left/right. Didnt take much time to reconnect and bleed them. So i saved time i hope some money.

BigVic, I have both the Haynes 82-92 Firebird manual, and the "real" GM/Helms '86 Firebird service manual.
I rebuilt one of my rear disc brake calipers when I went to rear disc brakes. The Haynes book closely mirrored the caliper rebuild procedure found in the GM book. It's not hard at all, in fact it's very easy, and involves just what KS91Z28 said.
So if you get the Haynes manual for that Blazer, you should be good to go. I remember I paid $12 for a caliper rebuild (seals) kit from expressautoparts.com... and a rear rebuilt caliper (for the other side which was too rusted up) ran me $60, so I saved a few bux. Front calipers are more common and thus less expensive.

Thanks for the replies guys. I feel better about rebuilding the calipers now. I was able to find some literature pertaining to the process and it is pretty straight forward.
I know buying raman. calipers would be the easier route, but I always seem to get "bad" remanufactured parts, and I would rather do the job once instead of having to pull the defective part back off and exchanged it for another.

i always find it strange that people are weary of reman parts...ive put many many reman parts on cars in the 2 1/2 years ive had a liscence (ive owned 5 diff cars in that time...) and never really had a problem. but then thats probably because i know what brands to use and what not to, since i work at a parts store. anyway, when i tell people something is remanufactured they get this look on their face. if you get parts from A1 remanufacturing company (they make water pumps, calipers, p/s pumps, master cylendars, steering gears, rack and pinions etc..) they're in good shape 99% of the time.
