Homemade SFC

i was talking to a guy last night, and he said to cut 2" wide strips out of the floor on each side, and put in 2" square tubing on each side of the car. i'm most likely am going to put in a cage, so i was wondering if this would make a sh*t bit of difference. i guess that doing it all at the same time would allow me to tie the cage to the tubing.

no idea why he'd say to cut strips out of your floor. i made my SFCs and never cut the floor. there are lot of makers out there and none of their parts require you to cut the floor. jack your car up get under it and take a look and see what you need to do to make it work.

What the guy probably meant was to FULLY weld the subframe connectors to the floor. This is ALOT stronger than just welding at the frt. and rear frame points. It makes the whole car stiffer by having a solid weld frt. to back and integrating the floor. Welding a cage to this setup would be an excellent idea.

there are a number of ways to do it.But this is probably the most thorough way of doing it.By doing it this way, you get to weld from up top AND underneath resulting in NO flex. Another benefit of running them through the floor is extra ground clearance, extra room for exhaust and a good roll cage anchor point.I do, however, have to question doing this to a slightly warmed over street car. Unless your running 450-500 horsepower with t-tops and slicks, just weld them to the frt. and rear and along the floor wherever you can and be happy with this.Let the pro street guys do all the cutting and welding!

Thanks guys, what i meant by cutting the floor was putting 1" on top and 1" on the bottom of the floor. the guy cut the stips so they would be tight to the tubing, and beat the tubing into place, and the welded the sh*t out of it.

That's an old mustang trick, their subframes are almost inline with eachother (you only need 1 slight bend), you cut out the floor and hammer the SFC back into the rear subframe then weld it to the floor.

It's harder to do that with an F-body because the SFC would have to be an "S" shape.

The only downside is you need to be REALLY good with the Sawsall any gaps and you're defeating the purpouse.
