Any of you guys make your own LCA?

My friend is up at RIT and he spends his life in the machine shop, he said he could make me just about anything that did not involve casting. Well LCA seemed like an easy enough favor to ask for, my only question is where did you guys find the polyurethane bushings? Or would the solid metal greasable bushings be a better choise for my car?

The LCA's are a critical suspension component so it has to be done right. If a STB orSFC failed at 70mph, on a busy freeway, chances are life and limb would not be jepordized. IF an LCA came apart it could spell disaster.Since your friend is at a technical institute, I assume that a competent welding and fabrication expetise is available.

IF I were going to build something like that I would first construct a jig to build it in. I would build the jig around a stock LCA. This would keep the center lines of your pivot points in line with OEM specs and would preserve built in offset (if any) that the factory engineers designed in. Double check if left and right LCA's are mirror images by bolting the other OEM LCA into the jig, upside down. If it fits easily and the bolts slide thru without binding then you should be able to construct the other side in the same jig (upside down position).

If your car is a street car, I would stay away from solid bushings. You could use almost any poli graphite bushing that has the right size hole thru the center (I.D.), since you would be custom building th LCA around that particular bushing O.D.

Since he has access to a machine shop I'd try to have the LCAs made of billet aluminum. There's a few aftermarket companies that sell them. Suposidly their 4 times stronger then tubular LCAs. checkout the pictures of Metco's billet aluminum LCAs for ideas at http://www.fasttoys.net/8292fbodysusp.html

This is one hightech machine shop to. He has acces to aircraft grade aluminum among other goodies. He makes parts for their Baha racer team also and he is hands down the best fabricator of parts from scratch I know.

One quick and easy way to beef up the LCAs are to "box" them. Just weld a plate to the bottom, (open) end and viola!! Much stiffer.
