replacing struts ( what should I be careful about)

What about the springs when i unbolt the top nut? should I put a jack underneath the a arm.

Yes, keep the jack under the lower control arm.

One thing to keep in mind, while the old struts are most likely shot and you can compress them yourself, the new ones are not. Absolutely, do not cut that special tape that loops around the top of the strut until you have the 2 lower bolts (not really tight) on the hub. Aim for the hole in the strut mount in the fender, cut the tape, and guide the strut into the hole. Tighten things up and carefully drive to get it aligned.
